King Abijah receives a victory but by no skill of his own. This is another of the many times that God uses people to accomplish His plans despite the quality of the person and reminder that God will always be glorified either through us or in spite of us if need be.
It is quite a speech that Abijah gives here describing Judah’s adherence to the practices God called the Jews to and how Jeroboam had lead Israel away from those things. So he affirms their trust in God and the confidence they had that God was on their side. Jeroboam thought he could use a clever military tactic to get the upper hand, and it usually would, but not when you are coming against God. And so God enables Abijah to have victory and they inflict 500,000 casualties. That number struck me, because if we have 10 or 20 casualties, we think it is too many. Just imagine hearing on the news there were 500,000….Times have certainly changed, but we could all heed Abijah’s call to be faithful to the things of God.
