Job 17 (NIV)

1 My spirit is broken,
my days are cut short,
the grave awaits me.
2 Surely mockers surround me;
my eyes must dwell on their hostility.

  1. In this chapter Job is speaking to God and his friends. He is being mocked and feels that God has made him a byword for the people spit in his face. Yet he says of his friends that he can`t find any with wisdom among them. And he is right for their wisdom is not from God but from their own limited mine set that only the wicked would suffer. Then Job says that the desires of his heart is to change night into day and darkness into light. His hope is in God so that when he dies or turns to dust he will see God. He doesn`t directly say he will see God here but he does in chapter 19; 25,26 say that his flesh will see God. Anyways that`s how I read it. God bless us as we are brought through trials and may we as Job keep our eyes upon our Savour.

  2. Job continues to feel humiliated and mocked not just by his circumstances but even his friends. He expresses his frustration because he knows God could open their eyes to his situation so their counsel could be more of a comfort, however, their hearts aren’t looking toward God to help Job but rather just leaning on their own limited understanding.
    Job longs for death as a relief from this turmoil and while he expresses hope that death will end his suffering here on earth, you still see doubt that he believes his death will bring reconcilliation with God which is his true desire not simply an escape from his pain.

  3. How hard it is to have to tell people that are there to console and counsel you that they are not doing a good job. Job is still suffering greatly and people are treating him callously and harshly for it. He sees no resolution or hope in sight but still sees God as the One to whom to turn for answers. Sometimes that is the best we can do when tragedy hits us so deeply.
