2 Chronicles 12 (NIV)

Shishak Attacks Jerusalem
1 After Rehoboam’s position as king was established and he had become strong, he and all Israel with him abandoned the law of the Lord2 Because they had been unfaithful to the Lord, Shishak king of Egypt attacked Jerusalem in the fifth year of King Rehoboam. 3 With twelve hundred chariots and sixty thousand horsemen and the innumerable troops of Libyans, Sukkites and Cushites that came with him from Egypt, 4 he captured the fortified cities of Judah and came as far as Jerusalem...........Continue Reading

  1. Comment: One of my favorite interactions between God and a person in the Bible is when God asks Solomon what he wants. Solomon, of course, replies wisdom and knowledge” so he could be a good ruler. If only we could find a leader like that today.
King Rehoboam is quite another matter it seems. First, he ignores the advise of his father’s elders and follows the advise of his buddies growing up. I guess wisdom is not passed down in the DNA. In Chapter 11, Rehoboam follows the word of the Lord and does not attack his fellow Israelites. He fortifies the cities of Judah but does not follow the ways of the Lord.
The Lord says “you have abandoned me, therefore, I now abandon you to Shishak.” The kingdom is now divided into North and South but God shows mercy on them, however, because “the leaders humbled themselves before the Lord”. Neither side really gets it though.

  2. Reading John chapter 14 today. So wish there was a movie concentrating on John 13-17. The last supper! Do not let your heats be troubled. Trust in my Father. Trust also in me. What a promise. I’m going to prepare a place for you and I will come back and bring you to where I am. Thomas. Lord we don’t know where your going so how would we know the way. Top verses in all of scripture. I am the way the truth and life. No-one comes to the father except through me. Philip says Lord show us the father and that will be enough for us. Philip if you have seen me. You have seen the father!! What powerful verses

  3. A quick picture of what happens when a people decides to follow the Lord.
“So the leaders of Israel and the king humbled themselves; and they said, “The Lord is righteous.”
Now when the Lord saw that they humbled themselves, the word of the Lord came to Shemaiah, saying, “They have humbled themselves; therefore I will not destroy them, but I will grant them some deliverance.”

“When he humbled himself, the wrath of the Lord turned from him, so as not to destroy him completely; and things also went well in Judah.”

“And he did evil, because he did not prepare his heart to seek the Lord.”

We studied this Tuesday in the women’s study about God choosing “a man after HIs own heart”, and what that means.

We did a word study on the word, “heart” in the Bible.
inner man, mind, will, heart, soul, understanding, inner part, inclination, resolution, determination of will, seat of passions and emotions, seat of appetites, conscience, moral character, seat of courage
I often find that how the word of God defines itself helps me to grasp a deeper meaning of what it is saying.

  4. Once Rehoboam’s was king he become strong, he and all Israel with him abandoned the law of the Lord. 2Because they had been unfaithful to the Lord. Who said you have forsaken me so I will do the same to you. They then humbled themselves so God did not destroy them all.

  5. He wanted them to humble themselves. Humble is a word that has popped up for me a few times this week so funny that I am reading it again here. God wants a humble heart. He wants us to be more like Him and less like ourselves so He can be glorified through us. Humble is just remembering our place as creation and Him as creator. It keeps balance in our life and allows God to use us.

  6. It is unfortunate that this chapter gives a too common experience between humanity and God. Rehoboam is strong and establishes himself over Judah and establishes fortified cities. So he and the rest of Judah forsake God. God then either brings calamity on them or doesn’t protect them as He normally would, and the king of Egypt attacks. After all, Solomon’s wealth was well known. With the calamity upon them, the leaders of Judah, including the king, humble themselves before God. Because of their humility, God decides to help and therefore they still suffer defeat, but they are not destroyed and God allows good to happen even in spite of things that are hard. It is too common a story in all our lives. Wouldn’t it be nice if we believed, were humble and obeyed just because it was true rather than have the good or bad circumstances be the thing that is driving the dynamic? Those are the three primary elements of what God calls us to in or walk with Him. They are the things that make the Christian life work. That way God can focus on using us and blessing us rather than disciplining us. It was also interesting to learn Rehoboam’ s mom’s name and see that she was an Ammonite. Now we know where the evil influence on Rehoboam came from, rooted in the bad choices Solomon made to marry foreign women. Boy do we need to be careful of the influence we have on people and the influence we allow to effect us.
