1 Chronicles 29 (NIV)

Gifts for Building the Temple
1 Then King David said to the whole assembly: “My son Solomon, the one whom God has chosen, is young and inexperienced. The task is great, because this palatial structure is not for man but for the Lord God. 2 With all my resources I have provided for the temple of my God—gold for the gold work, silver for the silver, bronze for the bronze, iron for the iron and wood for the wood, as well as onyx for the settings, turquoise, stones of various colors, and all kinds of fine stone and marble—all of these in large quantities.............Continue Reading

  1. Even though David did not build the temple, he provided many of the resources necessary for its construction and how wonderful that the people followed his lead and gave generously as well. God does love a cheerful giver and it is a privilege to give to the Lord’s work. And David makes a good point as well. All that we give to God flows from Him, so our giving is just returning what He has provided. And what a great prayer David prays exalting and praising God.

And what great occasion to have a big party: closing the chapter on David’s kingship, and opening it on Solomon’s. Sacrifices were made and a portion of those were intended to go back to the sacrificer and they would then often be shared. And so generosity brings benefits to all.

  2. David gives all that is needed for Solomon to build God’s house.
The people contribute generously from a genuine heart of their property and their service.

“Thine, O Lord is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine; thine is the kingdom, O Lord, and thou art exalted as head above all.
Both riches and honour come of thee, and thou reignest over all; and in thine hand is power and might; and in thine hand it is to make great, and to give strength unto all.
Now therefore, our God, we thank thee, and praise thy glorious name.”

  3. 14“But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to give as generously as this? Everything comes from you, and we have given you only what comes from your hand.

Was so cool to see the people give so generously to the construction of the temple but it is not surprising as they were following the lead of King David who himself gave all he had for it as well.
He held true to words in his prayer and in particular verse 14 when he reminds us that we only have what we have because of God so we are only returning to Him what He has blessed us with.
