1 Chronicles 28 (NIV)

David’s Plans for the Temple
1 David summoned all the officials of Israel to assemble at Jerusalem: the officers over the tribes, the commanders of the divisions in the service of the king, the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds, and the officials in charge of all the property and livestock belonging to the king and his sons, together with the palace officials, the warriors and all the brave fighting men.
2 King David rose to his feet and said: “Listen to me, my fellow Israelites, my people. I had it in my heart to build a house as a place of rest for the ark of the covenant of the Lord, for the footstool of our God, and I made plans to build it. 3 But God said to me, ‘You are not to build a house for my Name, because you are a warrior and have shed blood.’............Continue Reading

  1. Such an important legacy Solomon is stepping into. As great a king as David to follow and to have such an important job to build this temple. He was young but God was sure to use David to set the groundwork for him and to be sure that he had the people, supplies, and instructions to follow through with it.

He would just need to be sure to stay on the path that God had left before him and the instructions David gave him in verse 9 are so powerful and resonated to me as something I want and try to convey to my children

9“And you, my son Solomon, acknowledge the God of your father, and serve him with wholehearted devotion and with a willing mind, for the Lord searches every heart and understands every desire and every thought. If you seek him, he will be found by you; but if you forsake him, he will reject you forever.

I will pray and share these words with my children everyday!

  2. What a legacy David passes onto his son, Soloman.

“And thou, Solomon my son, know thou the God of thy father, and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind: for the Lord searcheth all hearts, and understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts: if thou seek him, he will be found of thee; but if thou forsake him, he will cast thee off for ever.”
This reminds me of the verses that we are studying in Samuel right now where Samuel says that God will choose a man after His own heart, that man being David. I think David gives here the definition of being “after God’s heart.”
Being a “man after God’s own heart” isn’t just in thought, as we see in verse 9, but also in action. A man after God’s own heart follows through on the actions God has set for him – building His house.
“10 Take heed now; for the Lord hath chosen thee to build an house for the sanctuary: be strong, and do it.”
But God doesn’t just say, “Go do this.” He is with us and equips us for every task He has for us.
“20 And David said to Solomon his son, Be strong and of good courage, and do it: fear not, nor be dismayed: for the Lord God, even my God, will be with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee, until thou hast finished all the work for the service of the house of the Lord.”

Another thing that I found amazing was that God gave David the pattern: “All this, said David, the Lord made me understand in writing by his hand upon me, even all the works of this pattern.” I think of how God’s word became the written Bible.

  3. How important it is for David to gather all the leaders, military, monetary and religious together to hear him pass the torch to his son Solomon. Whenever there is a transfer of leadership, it is important for the former leader to encourage those who have trusted and followed him to trust and follow the next as well. And yet David also is wise to make sure these leaders here him tell Solomon the kind of man and leader he is to be. How important it will be for him to follow God wholeheartedly and for him to recognize that God is supreme and knows the hearts of man. And yet it won’t be enough for Solomon to hear what David has said but to do it. Actions really do speak louder than words.

As David passes this along though, I cannot help but think how well Solomon followed this words at the beginning, but then forsook them at the end of his life. Finishing well is so important and not fall into the various pitfalls that lead leaders astray. Lust, pride and materialism are all too common traps that we must be vigilant to avoid. And God gives various resources and reasons to do so….
