The gatekeepers were like the security for the temple. It seems like they had maybe a humble but important role in the temple in that they weren’t priests but they still made sure people were ready to enter and did things appropriately. I always appreciate the efforts of “behind the scenes” people who make the overall experience of better without us even knowing.
There was a lot to manage as people came through the gates in terms of observation, aid, direction and assurance of compliance. So clearly fit and able people were necessary. I also love whenever Obed Edom is mentioned since he is the one in whom’s home the ark of the covenant was in after Uzzah was killed trying to sturdy it and David didn’t know what to do.
