1 Chronicles 27 (NIV)

Army Divisions

  1. I am always struck by God’s attention to detail in the things that we may see as mundane but it speaks to His character that there is a respectful order of things. Also everyone is mentioned reminding us that God does not value one position over another but rather each job, each person is a vital part of God’s economy.
Creator of the universe and the divine orchestrator of ALL things and still puts precise attention to every detail, even my own life….wow!

  2. “But David took not the number of them from twenty years old and under: because the Lord had said he would increase Israel like to the stars of the heavens.
Joab the son of Zeruiah began to number, but he finished not, because there fell wrath for it against Israel; neither was the number put in the account of the chronicles of king David.”

I guess counting indicates self reliance…..counting $, counting people, counting “stuff”, materialism.
Reliance on the flesh rather than on God.
It doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t keep records, though, this is the book of Chronicles.

  3. I do wonder if there is significance of the military being listed here. It shows that military affairs and order are important to God, but it follows all the lists of people and functions in the practice of worship and the function of the temple. It makes sense that those are ultimately a greater priority and it is interesting to consider if the relative order of these things communicates that. It was also interesting to read all the different facets of what would be part of the ownership and function of the kings of Israel. David was certainly blessed by God and the result of that was different people responsible to manage his possessions and lands.
