  1. This is one of several Psalms that exalt the city of Jerusalem. It was an ordained place. As the people were about to reenter the land in the book of Deuteronomy, Moses told them that God would select a single location for them to worship Him. Eventually that place became Jerusalem. Jerusalem was also David’s city where his throne resided. Along with David being blessed by God, Jerusalem was blessed as well. It is based in these aspects that the thoughts about Jerusalem are expressed in this Psalm. What a glorious thing for the Jews to worship God there as they recognized the Shekinah glory of God resided in the temple there. Several times a year the Jews were commanded to go there to offer sacrifices and celebrate different festivals. So it was both a place for the people to glorify God as well as the place for the people to gather together and internalize the communal nature of their faith. It is this community, this special place and their great God that are exalted in this Psalm!

  2. 6 Pray for the peace of Jerusalem!
“May they be secure who love you!
    7Peace be within your walls
    and security within your towers!”
8For my brothers and companions’ sake
I will say, “Peace be within you!”
9For the sake of the house of the Lord our God,
    I will seek your good.
