Judges 18 (NIV)

The Danites Settle in Laish
1 In those days Israel had no king.
And in those days the tribe of the Danites was seeking a place of their own where they might settle, because they had not yet come into an inheritance among the tribes of Israel. 2 So the Danites sent five of their leading men from Zorah and Eshtaol to spy out the land and explore it. These men represented all the Danites. They told them, “Go, explore the land.”
So they entered the hill country of Ephraim and came to the house of Micah, where they spent the night........Continue Reading

  1. So sad! So far off God’s path for them! Priests for hire going to the highest bidder with no regard for actually following God!

  2. It is interesting that the Danites are looking for territory when they are given an allotment in the book of Joshua. It says they had a hard time securing their inherited territory, so we cam imagine they weren’t following God the way they should. Further indication of their unfaithfulness is their desire for this ephod, idol and carved image. And yet there’s latent aspects of faith in asking the Levite if their path would be blessed by God, not that I would trust what this levite says since he was comfortable with Micah’s situation. It is kind of like the person who cares nothing about the things of God, isn’t in the Word or really seeking deeper fellowship with Him or following His ways, but then asks you to pray for them when they get sick. There are many things that get broken when we are not applying ourselves to the ways of God. We will end up in places we shouldn’t go and do things we shouldn’t do. Far better to be following God completely and be guided by Him and receive the things from Him that we should have.

But the time of the Judges is confusing because the people are back and forth with God and they don’t have a king…and each man is doing what seems right in their own eyes….and that very rarely works….

  3. No mentioned of God. Idols and. What can I get out of this situation. Total selfish thinking. Makes for boring reading. Can’t wait till Israel returns to God And the scriptures become alive again

  4. 27Then they took what Micah had made, and his priest, and went on to Laish, against a people at peace and secure. They attacked them with the sword and burned down their city. 28There was no one to rescue them because they lived a long way from Sidon and had no relationship with anyone else. The city was in a valley near Beth Rehob.
The Danites rebuilt the city and settled there. 29They named it Dan after their ancestor Dan, who was born to Israel—though the city used to be called Laish. 30There the Danites set up for themselves the idol, and Jonathan son of Gershom, the son of Moses, and his sons were priests for the tribe of Dan until the time of the captivity of the land. 31They continued to use the idol Micah had made, all the time the house of God was in Shiloh.

  5. Once again in Judges we see people doing what they please. Makes me consider our own nation. Do we want a nation where there is lawlessness and every man does as he pleases, or do we want a government that dictates our every move? It seems we are caught between two evils. There is lawlessness with rioting and looting and criminal activities that go unjudged and unpunished, and there is a government that is imposing edicts upon us not consistent with our laws, AND not upholding the law or imposing consequences on those that are violating them AND the government itself may even be complicit in the very acts committed.

I’m praying to God for justice and righteousness to be revealed.
