Obadiah’s Vision
1 The vision of Obadiah.

We have heard a message from the Lord:
An envoy was sent to the nations to say,
“Rise, let us go against her for battle”—
2 “See, I will make you small among the nations;
you will be utterly despised.
3 The pride of your heart has deceived you,
you who live in the clefts of the rocks
and make your home on the heights,

  1. So Edom being the descendants of Esau are being told of their coming judgement here. God seems particularly frustrated that their treatment of Judah being descendants of Jacob, Esau’s brother. The never helped Judah and they seemed to relish in their distress and ultimately took advantage of that weakened state for their own personal gain. Almost a long time coming revenge of Esau against his brother.
    We are to forgive, especially our brothers and sisters, and instead Edom joined in the pain of Judah and God tells them that this is unacceptable and they too will be judged for their actions and at the hand of Israel. But still in the end Edom restoration will come as it will be back as the Lord’s.

  2. This one chapter book is dedicated to declaring God’s judgment on Edom, the descendants of Esau, and thus relatives of the people of Israel. Rather than being harmonious as family should be, Edom was Israel’s enemy and took advantage of any opportunity to get the upper hand over them. It is for their disregard and misuse of the Jews that they are to be judged. Even though they think themselves secure, powerful and prosperous, God is gong to bring them down. It is a telling statement for all people in verse 3 that the pride of their hearts has deceived them. This seems to be the consistent condition of the human heart….and certainly of our world today. And God tells us He makes war against the proud…which is exactly what He will meet out to Edom and to all nations that will not turn to Him. May we find the grace that God gives to the humble…and let that be the condition of our hearts.

  3. Wow some uplifting words in a way. Someone’s going to get destroyed but it’s not Israel. As we would protect our own children. God is protecting his children on earth. Comforting to read. Along with Israel. We have become children of the one true God. How comforting is that!!
