Amos 9 (NIV)

Israel to Be Destroyed
1 I saw the Lord standing by the altar, and he said:
“Strike the tops of the pillars
so that the thresholds shake.
Bring them down on the heads of all the people;
those who are left I will kill with the sword.
Not one will get away,
none will escape.
2 Though they dig down to the depths below,
from there my hand will take them.
Though they climb up to the heavens above,
from there I will bring them down............Continue Reading

  1. Seems real foolish to think that we (or the Israelites) can hide ourselves from God. After all, He is God. Even our best efforts to hide from God or even silence his prophets , God says “I will fix my eyes upon them for evil and not for good.” So judgement is inevitable at some point and it will be ugly and only a remnant will survive and be displaced. Even after all that Israel will be restored after a time. “I will plant Israel in their own land, never again to be uprooted from the land I have given them.”

  2. It takes a lot for God to speak like this, but when He does and He acts, there is no place to hide form Him. His judgment/discipline will find you. And He is Sovereign over all the earth, and He is control and looks on all nations and they will answer to Him too, but He will not totally destroy Jacob. And the people of Israel might think that they are exempt, but God will shake them to the core. And yet judgment is never the final word for God’s people. He always promises to bring them back to the land, foster obedience and bless them once again. We are the ones who dictate God’s actions towards us. He would much rather be guiding, empowering and blessing, but He also must judge in a way consistent with His character. He can be nothing else.

  3. Tough words to read. The future of Israel is captivity and exile. We read this and say how could they be so stubborn and obstinate. From the Tower of Babel till present time man hasn’t changed. Pray that God will return this country to its first love 🇺🇸

  4. Amos 9
    Even hiding at the bottom of the sea won’t be protection. He’ll send a serpent to bite. No place to hide. It seems that even though he would punish so harshly, it hurts him and he just wants to restore Israel back to its glory. Makes me think of when a parent says to a child, “this will hurt me more than you.” And then we just want happiness back again but hope the lesson was learned.

  5. We can’t hide from God. We may think because we are good in some areas of our lives it excuses the areas of our life where we are not listening to God but He knows our hearts and He sees everything. Like a good Father he will correct was needs correcting and we won’t “get away” with anything.
    But there is always love in that correction and restoration waiting for us as there was for Israel.

  6. God will sift His people:

    For surely I will command,
    And will sift the house of Israel among all nations,
    As grain is sifted in a sieve;
    Yet not the smallest grain shall fall to the ground.
    10 All the sinners of My people shall die by the sword,
    Who say, ‘The calamity shall not overtake nor confront us.’

    He will also rebuild:

    On that day I will raise up
    The tabernacle of David, which has fallen down,
    And repair its damages;
    I will raise up its ruins,
    And rebuild it as in the days of old;
    12 That they may possess the remnant of Edom,
    And all the Gentiles who are called by My name,”
    Says the Lord who does this thing.

    We are included too: The Gentiles who are called by My name.
