Amos 8 (NIV)

A Basket of Ripe Fruit
1 This is what the Sovereign Lord showed me: a basket of ripe fruit. 2 “What do you see, Amos?” he asked.
“A basket of ripe fruit,” I answered.
Then the Lord said to me, “The time is ripe for my people Israel; I will spare them no longer.
3 “In that day,” declares the Sovereign Lord, “the songs in the temple will turn to wailing Many, many bodies—flung everywhere! Silence!”...........Continue Reading

  1. No summer fruit.

“Behold, the days are coming,” says the Lord God,
“That I will send a famine on the land,
    Not a famine of bread,
    Nor a thirst for water,
But of hearing the words of the Lord.”

  2. God’s patience is wearing thin, both for Israel’s false worship (false gods and symbol without substance in their Jewish ceremony) and for their treatment of the poor. Although people throughout history have taken advantage of those who are weak and vulnerable, they have always been close to God’s heart and He always instructed His people to take care fo them. Here He shows His disfavor over that practice. And although people are content with how things are, God is going to turn the tables on many things and turn songs into wailing. God will cause disaster upon them so they will no longer be satisfied with their lives, but will be forced to mourn because of how bad things will get. God will make His point, will they receive and learn?

  3. With all that’s going on in the world I was looking at one of my favorite verses in all of scripture Colossians 315 let the peace of God rule in your heart that always brings me back to fixing my eyes on the Lord. and reminds me of all the fruit of the spirit that we have. Now it’s a great day!!

  4. “A famine of hearing the words of the Lord”… I’m thinking this identifies with even today….choosing to not hear or abide by the one true gospel.
“Then they will search and search for the word of the Lord, but will not find it.”
Clearly heard and ignored! They ‘knew’ about the gospel because they knew what they were searching for. It took serious calamity for them to ‘search and search’.

  5. So many similarities to today in this chapter. Corrupt business practice, those in a better place taking advantage of those that are not, and people’s inability to hear God’s words!
A famine of God’s word certainly isn’t God not providing His word but rather an inability for one to hear it for their own pride, greed, and distance from God.
Today we see all these things and I fear this world is like ripe fruit getting close to its expiration. We cling to the hope we have in Christ and know that He is always with us if we continue to listen to His voice!
