Psalms 76-77 (NIV)

For the director of music. With stringed instruments. A psalm of Asaph. A song.
1 God is renowned in Judah;
in Israel his name is great.
2 His tent is in Salem,
his dwelling place in Zion.
3 There he broke the flashing arrows,
the shields and the swords, the weapons of war
4 You are radiant with light,
more majestic than mountains rich with game.............Continue Reading

  1. God is listening to our cry, our song, our voice when we call to Him. Despite the circumstances around us and our limited understanding of God’s greater design we need to cling to the fact that He alone knows the end and we must have faith for the God of creation is working all the while.

  2. Man’s weapons are like twigs to the Lord.
    He breaks their bows and arrows and swords and shields.
    Even strong (stout) men are robbed in their sleep.
    Mighty men can’t find use of their hands.
    Chariots and horses sleep.

    You, Yourself, are to be feared;
    And who may stand in Your presence
    When once You are angry?
    You caused judgment to be heard from heaven;
    The earth feared and was still,
    When God arose to judgment,
    To deliver all the oppressed of the earth. Selah

    This makes me think of the last battle when all the nations come to do battle against Jesus.

  3. Psalm 76 points to the greatness of God over all the powers of the earth. Strong men, warriors, kings may seem to be great and be feared, but God is greater still and no earthly authority or skill trumps His. And yet God is also a refuge as we see in Psalm 77. We can be comforted by the fact that God will never leave us or forsake us. And yet we at times need to counsel our own souls in who God is and what He has done. It is fitting for us to cry out to the Lord and when we are distressed to seek Him. But we can also reflect on His greatness, His presence and His works. Creation resounds in the nature of God and points to what kind of God He is. He has spoken to and controlled all the aspects of what we see on this earth and in the universe. And if He can do all that, He can handle us and our lives as well. Amen?

  4. Psalm 77. We can all relate to times when we feel God is not answering. Questioning the truth of God. At that time it’s easy to remember the times in the past when he has filled us with his spirit and delivered us from storms.

  5. When we feel that God has abandoned us, it is important to shift our thoughts out of despair and remember all that he has done for us. And meditate on his character that is exhibited throughout his Word – of his great love, mercy and grace that he lavishly bestows upon us. He is a powerful God, and the one who is in us is greater than the one who is in the world. The Lord is faithful, and he will help us through our difficult times.
