Reading along with us in Joshua and Timothy? Here’s today’s reading:

Joshua 6 (NIV)

1 Now the gates of Jericho were securely barred because of the Israelites. No one went out and no one came in.
2 Then the Lord said to Joshua, “See, I have delivered Jericho into your hands, along with its king and its fighting men. 3 March around the city once with all the armed men. Do this for six days.……Continue Reading

  1. The account of the battle of Jericho always makes me giggle a little. You can’t help but want to be a fly on the wall both inside and outside these walls. Outside I imagine there are a great deal of “we look crazy, what are we doing?” and inside the walls a great deal of “are they crazy, what are they doing?” over those first 6 days. This certainly is not any kind of normal battle scenario or strategy anyone normally tries! But again the people are obedient and they are victorious and God doesn’t forget the faith of Rahab! She and her belief in God was an integral part of this victory so God kept His promise and spared her and her family.
A great reminder of following God despite our fears, whether those are real fears of peril or loss or just the fear of looking stupid, and the victory that comes from obedience!

  2. ”And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted his eyes and looked, and behold, a Man stood opposite him with His sword drawn in His hand. And Joshua went to Him and said to Him, “Are You for us or for our adversaries?” So He said, “No, but as Commander of the army of the Lord I have now come.” And Joshua fell on his face to the earth and worshiped, and said to Him, “What does my Lord say to His servant?”“
    ‭‭Joshua‬ ‭5‬:‭13‬-‭14‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

I sometimes wonder how Moses or Joshua or any prophet knew the specific physical maneuvers God wanted them to take, here is an insight to how God sometimes relays His plans to men.

  3. Who will have all men to be saved….

What do I see in Joshua 6?
Seven days, God gave to the inhabitants to surrender to Israel. They chose not.

Seven days of silence, perhaps so they could hear anyone within the walls who would repent. Humility before the punishment to come.

Utter destruction, all living flesh, man and beast, save Rahab and her family.

God grants mercy, God keeps His promise, and God’s judgment is swift.

Consider if you will, Luke 13:1-9. Gordy

  4. Faith in action, obedience and patience = Victory.
    God always fulfills His promises.
Joshua 6 is just another example of His faithfulness to us.

  5. Reviewing some of my written notes in this chapter….
The number 7 means full, satisfied and complete.
It was the 7th day that the city was given to the Israelites. Victory completed!

  6. To be clear, and not cryptic, Luke 13 shows God wants everyone to repent, lest we perish. We shouldn’t point our finger and suppose death was due to their sin, as was said by spiritual leaders when Katrina hit New Orleans.

God judged Jericho, no denying that.

But the last passage of Luke 13:6-9 ensures no soul dies in this world, without the “Vinedresser” doing everything possible to draw men to Him. Jericho was dressed, but failed to bring fruit, saving Rahab.

Incredible that the first city to confront in the promised land, was the residence of Christ’s grandma, many generations later.

  7. God gave Joshua instructions on how they were to fight against Jericho. Seven priests were to bear before the Ark seven trumpets of rams horns. Armed men were to go before these priests and armed men after the Ark. For six days they were to go around the city once. On the seven day they were to go around the city seven times. each of the first six days they were all to be quiet and not say a word. But on the seven day, Joshua was to give the command for the priests to blow their trumpets and command the people to shout with one voice. All the people shouted and the walls fell down. It all came about as God had said because they obeyed the Lord. They were to kill everyone except Rahab`s family including all livestock. Also they were not to take any idols for this would bring their sin upon them. They were allowed to take gold, silver, iron, and brass to put into the treasury of the house of the Lord. And Joshua kept his promise to Rahab by allowing her family to live. Rahab lived with Israel all her days. This was a complete victory because everyone obeyed the Lord. God made the wall fall down but He limited Himself to the seven trumpets and the shout of the people. That is how He will use us. He could do it all but instead wants to use us for His work. He wants that relationship with us. God bless.

  8. Been reading Joshua. As the ark is brought across the Jordan and how it was to be tremendously respected. Crossing the River and placing a rock upon that miracle crossing. Love how the Bible mentions the River was overflowing when God preformed this miracle. Those twelve stones there today. Not the greatest example but this chapter always reminds me the end of Schindler’s list. As each Hebrew that Schindler saved from death place a stone on his memorial grave stone. Chapter 5. Think I would have lied as an adult. Already been done!! The angel thsat appears the end of chapter 5. Joshua the leader falls face down in respect. As we should with Gods power authority and deep love working beside us each day. Chapter 6. Not the size of your army or how many weapons. But a great example of obedience to carry out Gods plan with him marching before us. The only way we will become victorious

  9. How strange it must have been for Joshua, a military guy, to be told I have given you the city, and then the plans laid out are about priests carrying the ark and trumpets and people walking around the city in the way prescribed. It is so like our God to do things that are unconventional that emphasize His power and not our own. You do wonder if after the 7th time around on the 7th day, the thought might have been…I can’t believe that worked. But it did and a fine display of divine power expressed because of the faith and obedience of humans. This same God said it would not be be by might or power, but by His Spirit. And Joshua warns the people about taking the devoted things and fulfills the commitment to Rahab to protect her and her family.
