Reading along with us in John for Holy Week? Here’s today’s reading:

John 13 (NIV)

Jesus Washes His Disciples’ Feet
1It was just before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.
2The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus. 3Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; ..............Continue Reading

  1. The pain and suffering our lord is going to endure in the next 24 hours and it’s all about comforting the apostles and we get to read these words. The last supper what a picture of love that our father has for us. So glad we get to engage in the next few chapters this week!!

  2. So ALL things were under Jesus feet. And what’s the first thing he does. Gets on his knees and washes ALL the apostles feet. A person who has had a bath only Needs to wash his feet. What a picture

  3. First, thank you for diverting for a while to read a portion of scripture that aligns with the Christian calendar.

“Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come from God and was going to God, rose from supper and laid aside His garments, took a towel and girded Himself.”
As Jesus did these things, He KNEW what was going to happen, and that He was going back to the Father. If we can face hard situations, decisions, persecution and perhaps, even death KNOWING that we are going to be with God, that truth will enable us to prevail.

After Jesus washes the disciples feet and telling them that they ‘do not KNOW now, but will KNOW’ why He is doing these things. Again, KNOWING what Jesus did for us, and why He did it, not only gives us KNOWledge, but power and an example.

Jesus also KNOWS the disciples. He KNOWS which ones are clean and which ones are not.
I think His statement to Peter, “If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.”
was for our benefit. We must be washed by Jesus’ blood. Something that wasn’t understood until after Jesus died. Peter was “already clean” because he was already following and BELIEVING that Jesus was the Messiah. Peter’s betrayal, by denying Christ 3x, demonstrates our inability to walk in obedience in our flesh. Reminds me of the statement “the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

It is interesting that Jesus is troubled, but at this point, it is for His betrayer. “When Jesus had said these things, He was troubled in spirit, and testified and said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, one of you will betray Me.” Then the disciples looked at one another, perplexed about whom He spoke.” Even as He will face death on our behalf, He is concerned for the disciples, all the disciples.

“Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, where are You going?”
Jesus answered him, “Where I am going you cannot follow Me now, but you shall follow Me afterward.”
We KNOW that we have an eternal destination where we can follow Jesus.

We have so much power in KNOWING. So many battles are won in our mind.
    What can we know?
We know that Jesus died and rose again.
We know we have victory over sin through His death.
We know that we have victory over death.
We know that we have the power of the Holy Spirit.
We know that we have an eternal home in Heaven.
There are probably many more things in God’s word that we can know that will equip us here and for our life to come.

  4. The Lord of the universe washing His disciples feet. What a great expression of His humble and caring heart. And what a powerful picture He give of the distinction between justification and sanctification. Justification is the one and done cleaning that makes us right with God, there is no need for more baths. Sanctification is the moment by moment daily process of our lives getting dirty, but only our feet need to be cleansed. We confess our sins to get this cleaning, we don’t need to believe in Jesus over and over again.

And how hard it must be for Jesus to take these final moments with His disciples realizing what they will do as well as the sacrifice that awaits Him. Judas spent 3 years with Jesus and yet will turn Him over. Peter, the most loyal one, will deny 3 times that he knows Him. And though Jesus is troubled, He remains poised and is able to communicate the truth of what needs to be said. What a model of strength, faith and courage Jesus is.

  5. How heavy the heart and head of Jesus must have been during this time. To know not only of the physical pain He was about to bear but to also know of Judas’ plan to betray Him. Yet He stays calm and continues to teach, to love, and to care for those around Him. He washes the feet of His disciples…once again living the example He wishes for us to follow. Amazing love!

  6. John 13 – Serve & Love one another…
I was struck by the fact that Jesus was prophetic and he told the disciples who was going to betray him and that at the point of giving him bread in mind Satan entered Judas that shows us how much God is in control and sovereign can use evil for good.

  7. That’s wine… and they missed it…seemingly, John asked but I’m thinking because they were all breaking bread it was easy to miss. I believe He uses the prophetic to warn, encourage and communicate some of his intentions to us.

  8. The command to wash each other’s feet speaks of the communal nature of our faith. God’s desire for us is to not only be in relationship with Him but also with our fellow believers. To strengthen each other every day.

    1. Mark, Amy, Peter, Kelly, Matie and Ken,

I enjoyed reading all of your insights & what the Lord is highlighting to you.

I never thought of this passage as a picture of the difference between justification, believing in Jesus one time for salvation, versus sanctification -repenting whenever the Holy Spirit convicts of sin.

The communal aspect that Jesus is calling us into by washing 1 another’s feet is also a great highlight, along with the importance of prophetic ministry and our ability to overcome through KNOWLEDGE as we have the mind of the anointed one (Christ/Messiah).

  9. Ok… seems likeIm missing current date.
Some of these names are familiar.
Pretty dry reading but must have a good purpose .
