Reading along with us in Ephesians? Here’s today’s reading:

Ephesians 6 (NIV)

1Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2“Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise— 3“so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.
4 Fathers do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord..............Continue Reading

  1. “And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.”

I love that we are encouraged to pray to God for all kinds of requests!

  2. Ephesians 6 – the Armor of God – Paul tells us to be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. We have to be prepared to keep the darkness and Satans lies out of our lives and the only way to do that is immerse ourselves daily in the Word of God , know what the truth is, have faith and pray in the spirit. Put on the full armor of God!

  3. Paul ends his letter. Giving great advice on having a functional family. Would help a lot of people to read these verses. Too many parents try to be friends with their children and reward them for everything. And if anyone, especially a teacher, try’s to discipline. Yikes. Complete opposite of what I grew up with. Teacher was always right in my fathers eyes. And I enjoyed long life on earth. Never did my father exasperate his children. We always got what we deserved. Being a employer I have learned to treat employees with much respect. Making sure their pay was fair. And also letting them know the great job they are doing and are very much appreciated. Ok. To end this chapter. We have a real enemy who is constantly trying to frustrate us and get us to give up. Been a tough few months for me. And we know when we are at our weakest is when the attacks come. Thank God the Holy Spirit is there to help us and remind us of the word of God and to listen to the voice of truth. And that our lord is always with us. Have to remember to dress daily with the armor of God. I go thru periods where I do and then not so much. Thank you Jesus for defeating Satan by your death snd resurrection. Soon he will be crushed under your feet and thrown into burning sulfur. Where he belongs. Finally pray in the spirit on all occasions. Have to learn to shut out the noise and pray a lot more

  4. Offensive and defensive weapons:

    Offense:
    – be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might
    – we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.
    – Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth
    – having put on the breastplate of righteousness
    – shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace
    – the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God
    – praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints— and for me, that utterance may be given to me, that I may open my mouth boldly to make known the mystery of the gospel…..in it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.

    Defense:
    – put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil
    – take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
    – above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.
    – And take the helmet of salvation

I suppose there is some overlap. I see prayer as an offensive and defensive weapon.

  5. Paul continues to lay out God’s instructions for the different relationships in society by reenforcing what the Ten Commandments taught that children are to honor their parents by obeying them. The two are connected, one being the condition of the heart and the other reflected in behavior. Another aspect of this relationship is included by Paul to make sure fathers specifically do their part in not exasperating their children. The same balance is expressed in the master/slave relationship saying that slaves are to obey their masters and masters are to treat their slaves well. I wonder how slavery would be understood today if it was handled as God intended as a protection and provision for the poor and if masters treated slaves honorably as fellow humans and even believers rather than property.

Paul then moves on to what is a watershed passage for many believers, giving instructions as to how we are to stand firm in warfare. The most poignant revelation is our battle is not against people but against the evil kingdom that is behind all the evil activity in our world. Satan’s kingdom is real and he is organized and strategic. We must be fitted for battle if we are to stand strong. Each piece of equipment is useful as we cling to faith, truth and the word. How important it is to be protected by righteousness and the reality of our salvation and be motivated in our lives by the gospel we carry! The Spirit and the word are so interconnected that the sword we carry is called His sword as if the word that we speak is used by Him as He convicts hearts about the truth of God. And Paul would be remiss not to reenforce the importance of prayer both in or own battles as well as the prayers we pray for others. How important prayer is in our fellowship with God as well as accessing His provisions for our lives….

  6. God’s expectations are the same for all men. Slave and master He sees no difference in us and expects the same from both.
He gives us all the tools we need in the armor of God but we need to choose to pick it up and put it on and operate in it!
