John 14 (NIV)

Jesus Comforts His Disciples
1 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God believe also in me. 2 My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4 You know the way to the place where I am going.”..............Continue Reading

  1. He is the way, the truth, and the life! No one comes to the father except through Him!
As He is explaining this idea of the trinity to the confused disciples, a concept that still confuses people today, they have so many questions and a desire to physically see something they can not and understand something that is happening that hasn’t happened yet. But Jesus is trying to give them the reveal of His plan and the big picture of His time here on earth.
Must have been amazing to hear Him speak it even if they didn’t understand at the time. As it unfolded before them it becomes so clear that Jesus is our way to salvation!

  2. Here is again the confidence in knowing Jesus.

We know that He is going to prepare a place for us and He told us the way to get there.

“And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. 4 And where I go you KNOW, and the way you KNOW.”
5 Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not KNOW where You are going, and how can we KNOW the way?”
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”

Because we KNOW Jesus, we KNOW the Father also. “Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me, or else believe Me for the sake of the works themselves.” Jesus tells the disciples that even if they can’t believe on what He tells them, they have the very works that testify about Him.

We know that he hears and answers prayers.

We know that Jesus sent the Holy Spirit.

“..the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor KNOWS Him; but you KNOW Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.”

We know that those who love Jesus, Jesus will make a home with them.
We know that those who Love Jesus keep His word.
We know that Jesus gives us peace.

“Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”

  3. Absolutely love this chapter. What a promise of eternal life, as secure as our trust in Jesus. Love Thomas’ question and Jesus response One of the most important passages in all of scripture: uniting our lives with him is the same as uniting ourselves with God. As Jesus points out to Philip, if you have seen me, you have seen the father. I think about this and how do you describe Jesus. Loving. Compassionate. Caring. Sovereign. Holy. On and on you can go. And that is who our abba father is!! The promise of the Holy Spirit. If the Holy Spirit is living inside you, then Jesus lives with you along with the Father. vs 20 is an awesome verse!! Vs 27. The power of the Holy Spirit is to give us peace. As sin. Fear. Doubt and a bunch of other things come at us. The peace of God overrules so we need not fear the present or future. There’s a lot of noise in this world. But we need to tap into the power we receive from the Holy Spirit. Have not received a spirit of fear. But power and love. 5 times during the last supper Jesus tells to ask for anything in my name. 6 times he mentions his joy to be complete in them. It’s beyond belief that this is the dialogue at the last supper.

  4. What a powerful chapter filled with essential truths. Through Thomas’ confusion we learn what might be the most foundational, that Jesus is the only way to the Father and that He is the truth and the life as well. There is so much that we learn and receive from Him and it is all based in faith. Jesus also reveals that He and the Father are indelibly connected so that when you have seen Him, you have seen the Father because the Father is in Him. How important this is for trinitarian doctrine and a glimpse into how it and the incarnation works. And what could be a greater privilege than for those who believe to be in the mix as well. We are in Jesus (and the Father) and He is in us!!! There is no better expression of the closeness of God/Jesus to His people!! And if that wasn’t enough, Jesus says because He is leaving and they will not see the manifestation of Him and His father, He is going to send the Holy Spirit to them to be their counselor and companion. The results of these beyond what we could ask or think of provisions are obvious. The first is obedience. Jesus makes clear that love for Him cannot be a mere expression of words, but the only true expression is to obey His commands. The second result is peace. How can’t we be drawn to a God who is so present and providing and how can we not be at peace with all that He is and has given us. How important this will be for the disciples particularly as they can’t even imagine this Jesus who has been with them for 3 years will be crucified as a criminal….good thing He has warned them…..but are they listening and believing….time and the next chapters will tell….

  5. John 14: Jesus tells the Apostles the way to eternal life, trust in him , he has prepared a place for all believers, but no one comes to the Father except through Jesus, he is the way, the truth and the life. He explains the words he says come from the Father because his Father is in him. Jesus explains to the Apostles that he would be leaving them but would still remain with them because of the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of truth, which we are Blessed with as well. Jesus has made a way for all of us who believe in him and he has promised to come back until then we have the Spirit within us.

  6. What a wonderful gift the Holy Spirit is! Though this life is but a blink of an eye, God refuses to leave us on our own. Similar to the previous chapters’ call to “wash each other’s feet”, we are gifted with the ultimate source of strength and support.
