Jeremiah 36 (NIV)

Jehoiakim Burns Jeremiah’s Scroll
1 In the fourth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah, this word came to Jeremiah from the Lord2“Take a scroll and write on it all the words I have spoken to you concerning Israel, Judah and all the other nations from the time I began speaking to you in the reign of Josiah till now. 3 Perhaps when the people of Judah hear about every disaster I plan to inflict on them, they will each turn from their wicked ways; then I will forgive their wickedness and their sin.”.........Continue Reading

  1. Such defiance from the king to burn the words God gave them. Not the hoped for result that Jeremiah had when he sent Baruch to read the scroll. God’s provision to Baruch and Jeremiah is still evident in that the Princes of Judah knew to have them hide before they brought these words to the king knowing his response would likely put them both in danger again.
But God’s word is ever present, you can not just burn it or ignore it! His words are powerful and eternal and as the king burnt this copy another copy was made!

  2. What a testimony to the pride of man and the patience and justice of our God. God knows full well what is going to happen and yet He still has Jeremiah dictate the scroll and even expresses His desire to see the people of Judah repent. How sad it is when those under leadership respond better than the leader. And these scribes who were struck by the words of God knew what the kings response is going to be and thus they encourage Jeremiah and Baruch to go into hiding. And one wonders if there was any pang of conscience with every page of the word of God that he threw in the fire? How different this is from Jehoiakim’s father Josiah who tore his robes at the reading of the book of Deuteronomy. And yet in both cases, God in His justice gave both the opportunity to choose. God’s will and God’s word will go forward regardless of the choices we make….we will just be blessed or disciplined in the process. But boy has God given them chance after chance….kind of like He does for us. May we not take that for granted….

  3. So many things struck me about this chapter.

I was thinking of the physical writing of GOD’S words on a parchment/scroll/book and its preservation for His people and for us for this long. I am so glad God chose to have Baruch and Jeremiah re-write it! It reminds me of Moses breaking the tablets and re-writing them. God’s word is very important. What hubris for this king to think he could burn God’s word without consequence, and foolish to think that by burning it, he could prevent it from coming about.

I was also wondering about God preserving His word. There are obviously books that we no longer have like books mentioned in the Bible that we don’t have now. I am glad that we have God’s assurance that He will preserve His word. It would be interesting to read about how we came to the books we have now. I think I have before but have just forgotten. :/

That leads me to memory and the mind. I think we have lost our ability to remember and detail specific information said or written because it is so readily available. Would our memories be better if we had to keep things in our mind? I guess when God tells you something it is seared in your mind! I am thankful for the Holy Spirit that Jesus told the disciples would “bring everything to mind.” “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.”
