Jeremiah 35 (NIV)

The Rekabites
1 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord during the reign of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah: 2“Go to the Rekabite family and invite them to come to one of the side rooms of the house of the Lord and give them wine to drink.”
3 So I went to get Jaazaniah son of Jeremiah, the son of Habazziniah, and his brothers and all his sons—the whole family of the Rekabites.........Continue Reading

  1. The importance of covenant and obeying the commands of God is once again displayed in this chapter. The test of Jeremiah asking the Rechabites to drink wine, not commanding but asking, allowed them to publicly show that they would not disobey the commands handed down to them. They were still following the laws their fathers that they would drink no wine and live in tents and despite the fact that it would be easier to let those commands dwindle away over time they had remained faithful and God rewarded that.

It is easy for us to let go of the things we should sacrifice or remove from our lives, especially those things the world would tell us are “no big deal” but we need to remain faithful and look different than the world as I am sure the Rechabites looked different!

  2. A test for the Rechabites becomes an object lesson for Judah. They stay committed to the direction given by a forbearer (a human being) in regards to very secondary issues. And yet the people of Israel (and more directly Judah here) have rejected an agreement (covenant) made with with the Sovereign, Creator God around matters that are the most important to guide and sustain life (revering Him as Holy and the law giver who knows what is best). It is reminiscent of people calling all world religions the same, or people of other faiths doing more than believers in Jesus do for the sake of their Savior. As well as all of us reflecting on how committed we are to the covenant established through His blood…..selah……

  3. The Rechabites continue to obey the commandment of their father not to drink wine or live in tents. I would think this was a big temptation seeing who asked them! I do think that it is easier to obey or resist when you have done so all along. I think this is true of many of our fleshly desires, when we have not ever “fed” them, the temptation just really doesn’t exist, or if it did/does, it will disappear over time.

One would think that this scenario of the Rechabites would be God tempting them. But God does not temp us, it is our own sinful desires. It isn’t being tempted that is a sin, it’s allowing it to drag you away. From James 1 – “Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him. 13 Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. 14 But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. 15 Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.”

Also, God may test, but He gives you a way out.
“No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.” – 1 Corinthians 10:13
