Jeremiah 37 (NIV)

Jeremiah in Prison
1 Zedekiah son of Josiah was made king of Judah by Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon; he reigned in place of Jehoiachin son of Jehoiakim. 2 Neither he nor his attendants nor the people of the land paid any attention to the words the Lord had spoken through Jeremiah the prophet.
3 King Zedekiah, however, sent Jehukal son of Shelemiah with the priest Zephaniah son of Maaseiah to Jeremiah the prophet with this message: “Please pray to the Lord our God for us.”.........Continue Reading

  1. So king Zedekiah seems like he is on the fence with God. He does several things in this chapter to make me think he wants to just listen and yet worries too much what people might think if he does. First he asks Jeremiah to pray for them. He recognized that they were in a bad way and finally thought God was the answer instead of the power of their own armies and false prophets.
And while the response Jeremiah provides from God ends him up imprisoned again then Zedekiah secretly calls for Jeremiah to see what God might have to say. I am sure he does this in secret so people don’t know he is seeking counsel from Jeremiah who everyone has deemed an outcast for faithfully speaking God’s words at great penalty to himself. finally he releases Jeremiah from imprisonment and even provides daily food….an act of mercy toward someone he is supposed to hate. So many people want to trust God but worry too much about what that looks like for them personally, what they may have to give up, and who they may now not live in agreement with making life uncomfortable. I would certainly rather be a Jeremiah than a Zedekiah!

  2. I think Zedekiah’s greatest problem is treating Jeremiah and God like a good luck charm rather than truly hearing and adhering to God’s word through Jeremiah. See I won’t listen but I’ll ask you to pray. I won’t make sure Jeremiah’s reputation is secured amongst my officials so they trust him when he says something, but I will allow resentment to be present so when he is in custody, he is mistreated. But I will bring him before me and ask if God has said anything, so I can then decide whether or not I follow it. It is all about keeping God and His prophet at arms length rather then truly trusting and following. It is actually what most people do, but to their own peril. Zedekiah does bring him into better living conditions and provides food for him, but even that is just taking care of the good luck charm as opposed to true repentance.

  3. Zedekiah, as with Jehoikim before him, does not like what the Lord has to say, and yet, he fears what Jeremiah has told the kings and people of Judah. He asks Jeremiah to pray for him and even takes him out of prison secretly to see if he has heard a word from the Lord. He is at least convicted with regard to the treatment of Jeremiah to allow him to stay in the court of the prison (is this still in prison, just a “nicer” prison?)
