Reading along with us in Jeremiah? Here’s today’s reading:

Jeremiah 31 (NIV)

1“At that time,” declares the Lord, “I will be the God of all the families of Israel, and they will be my people.”
2 This is what the Lord says:
“The people who survive the sword
will find favor in the wilderness;
I will come to give rest to Israel.”
3 The Lord appeared to us in the past saying:
“I have loved you with an everlasting love;
I have drawn you with unfailing kindness........Continue Reading

  1. “I will turn their mourning into gladness;
    I will give them comfort and joy instead of sorrow.”
    Once again we see God sharing His plan for restoration of His people. So what would their reaction be? Singing and dancing and proclaiming all that God has done for them and that should be no different today! God has done all this for us as well and we should want to share that with the world!
    The new covenant is also mentioned that no longer are we to be punished for the sins of our fathers but rather accountable for ourself to trust and believe and receive our own redemption through Christ and the sacrifice Jesus made for each one of us.

  2. ““This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel after that time,” declares the Lord. “I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.”
    ‭‭Jeremiah‬ ‭31:33‬ ‭NIV‬‬

  3. “Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah— not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, though I was a husband to them, says the Lord. But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. No more shall every man teach his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.”

  4. Isn’t it interesting as we persevere through this book, how God gives the people the very message that they need? As they are prideful in their sinful ways and think all is fine and false prophets are convincing them the future was rosy, God gives the message that their rejection is going to bring judgement and exile. Things were not fine, they were tragic and God was going to punish them because that’s what He said He would do. Now all the things God has said have come to pass, they are either exiled to a foreign land or suffering losses of all sorts in the promised land. And in the midst of that, rather than rubbing their nose in it, He provides this glowing picture of restoration that He is going to bring. Just about every facet of their existence will be effected and most importantly God will lead them to righteousness and obedience. It certainly shows that God knows exactly what we need and reenforces how wise it is to trust Him for who He is and what He does.
