Jeremiah 32 (NIV)

Jeremiah Buys a Field
1 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord in the tenth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, which was the eighteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar. 2 The army of the king of Babylon was then besieging Jerusalem, and Jeremiah the prophet was confined in the courtyard of the guard in the royal palace of Judah.
3 Now Zedekiah king of Judah had imprisoned him there, saying, “Why do you prophesy as you do? You say, ‘This is what the Lord says: I am about to give this city into the hands of the king of Babylon, and he will capture it.........Continue Reading

  1. Wow talk about a great example of blind faith in action from Jeremiah in this chapter!
In prison as a result of sharing God’s word, God asks Jeremiah to buy this useless piece of land. This land is already under Babylonian control and the future of this land looked grim to everyone around him and they probably either were dumbfounded or hysterical that Jeremiah would even do this as if he weren’t already in a bad way. But God knows and Jeremiah trusted! This transaction would serve as another awesome object lesson and statement of Jeremiah’s faith because God knew He would restore this land back to His people and while Jeremiah was confused and asked for God’s guidance in the process he did it and did it just as he was asked to by God.
Taking such care of the deeds in the way God asked him to, should show us the importance we should show to protecting the promises of God in our hearts knowing that the difficulties of this life are temporary and eternal life is our future. Thinking in a different mindset and with a different priority list as this world is what we should be doing as Jeremiah did in this chapter.

  2. What a neat window into how property was purchased and transferred. It shows the validity of private property and the importance of documenting and validating it. But here in this chapter, purchasing property is an indicator that it will be maintained and bring good things and that requires safety and prosperity in the country. As Babylon has already exiled many and is still keeping pressure on Judah and Jerusalem, God let’s them know the worse is yet to come and it is due to their disobedience. God had been so good to them, but they chose to worship foreign gods. And yet the destruction and disruption to life that Nebuchadnezzar will bring will not be the end of the story. Once again the time will come when property will be able to be maintained and used. And that will be a reflection of the peace and prosperity that God will bring. It took quite a bit of faith for Jeremiah to do this as well….
