Jeremiah 27 (NIV)

Judah to Serve Nebuchadnezzar
1 Early in the reign of Zedekiah son of Josiah king of Judah, this word came to Jeremiah from the Lord2 This is what the Lord said to me: “Make a yoke out of straps and crossbars and put it on your neck. 3 Then send word to the kings of Edom, Moab, Ammon, Tyre and Sidon through the envoys who have come to Jerusalem to Zedekiah king of Judah. 4 Give them a message for their masters and say, ‘This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: “Tell this to your masters:...........Continue Reading

  1. God’s ways are certainly not our ways and this chapter reenforces the point. It is counter intuitive to think yielding is the best course of action, but God knows better and He always has and always will. That’s why we must heed His counsel and follow His direction regardless of what others are saying or even what our own senses are telling us. It takes faith and courage to follow but it will always be to our greater good. We must also be very careful who we listen to.

    The chapter also shows us that God will certainly use who He will to accomplish His purposes. His people need to be disciplined and He will use a pagan ruler to do it. And yet God will also have His own dealings with Nebuchadnezzar. So as much as he has influence on the Jews, the Jews will also have influence on him and all of Babylon, effectively being the light to the gentiles that God always intended the Jews to be, but them needing to be captives to be it….

  2. A message of humility and surrender for His people in the way of another object lesson. For Jeremiah to deliver this message wearing a yoke certainly drives that point home. God does not just want us to stop doing wrong but He wants us to repent and have a transformation of our heart and mind and to come to Him humbled and and empty to be filled by Him.

    I also love that while it seems an undeserving Nebuchadnezzar profits by the judgement God wants to show His people, God also reminds us in verse 6 when he says, “6Now I will give all your countries into the hands of my servant Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon; I will make even the wild animals subject to him.”, that God is simply using his servant for this time and judgement will also fall upon Nebuchadnezzar in God’s time as well.

  3. I can see why people were reluctant to accept this prophesy. It seems contrary to God’s will to put a pagan king in power over God’s people. Of course, they were warned.

    God tells them that He has put Nebuchadnezzar over them and over all nations and the beasts even. It is true that God places Kings and brings them down.

    Daniel 2:
    “Blessed be the name of God forever and ever,
    For wisdom and might are His.
    21 And He changes the times and the seasons;
    He removes kings and raises up kings;
    He gives wisdom to the wise
    And knowledge to those who have understanding.
    22 He reveals deep and secret things;
    He knows what is in the darkness,
    And light dwells with Him.”
