Jeremiah 28 (NIV)

The False Prophet Hananiah
1 In the fifth month of that same year, the fourth year, early in the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah, the prophet Hananiah son of Azzur, who was from Gibeon, said to me in the house of the Lord in the presence of the priests and all the people: 2“This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: ‘I will break the yoke of the king of Babylon. 3 Within two years I will bring back to this place all the articles of the Lord’s house that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon removed from here and took to Babylon............Continue Reading

  1. Not sure the motivation of Hananiah in this chapter….maybe he wanted to gain favor from man, maybe he just wanted to make himself feel better about this situation, or maybe he actually had malintent but we see this so often even today.

Too often we see people take the word of God and twist it for people to feel better about their sin, about their lifestyles, and ultimately gaining favor among men but at what cost?? These false profits, like Hananiah, are ultimately just bringing death on themselves and the people they convince to follow. We are as responsible for what we believe as those who teach are responsible for their words.

This seems particularly hard for young people today who want God’s message to fit worldly lifestyles and to convince themselves that the Bible is “old fashioned” and not fit for today but really the Bible is filled with flawed people making poor decisions in need of God’s correction which is EXACTLY like today.

  2. Well said, Kelly. One should also not presume to speak for God. It is never something to take lightly especially if your words are influencing others. It is easy to tell people what they want to hear, but the word of God often challenges our ideas and desires. That’s why we must take God at His word and not project on Him or on Scripture the things that we want to be right.

  3. Ignorance is bliss?
Only two years? I can handle that!
Hananiah probably thought he was helping, but he was making people trust in a lie.
    Their yoke became harder.

We refrain from sharing the truth with people because we don’t want to hurt people’s feelings, but meanwhile we are training them for continuing compromise and slavery to sin.
