Jeremiah Threatened With Death
1 Early in the reign of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah, this word came from the Lord2“This is what the Lord says: Stand in the courtyard of the Lord’s house and speak to all the people of the towns of Judah who come to worship in the house of the Lord. Tell them everything I command you; do not omit a word. 3 Perhaps they will listen and each will turn from their evil ways. Then I will relent and not inflict on them the disaster I was planning because of the evil they have done...........Continue Reading

  1. Once again Jeremiah finds himself facing death for his words and he remains strong even in the face of that punishment. “Do with me what you like” he says but it won’t change anything for your circumstances.
It seems this time some of the elders or princes had some sense about them to try to stop what was happening but at the same time reminding Jeremiah what happened to Urijah for doing this same thing and sharing God’s words with the people.
Once again God protected Jeremiah because he was faithful and trusted God even in a situation that seemed hopeless.

  2. It is amazing to me, and such a clear reflection of the gracious and forgiving God that we have, how many times He gives the people of Judah to repent. And He is even hopeful of the prospect! And yet as Jeremiah speaks the word of the Lord, he is threatened with death. It is a good reminder that speaking for God often comes with a cost as His message often brings a challenge to human thinking. And when people don’t want to hear it, then repercussions for speaking it come about. It is interesting to see the back and forth here and see the people who come to Jeremiah’s defense. It is really condemning to the people to remember the times that God spoke in times past and when the people repented then God relented. For them to know this and not follow the example set is the height of pride. It is like those today that remember principles from scripture but them mock them rather than follow them. But here, the positive role of the prophet in Israel’s history saves Jeremiah from death.

  3. God continues to give the people a chance. “Perhaps everyone will listen and turn from his evil way, that I may relent concerning the calamity which I purpose to bring on them because of the evil of their doings.”
Jeremiah stays on message despite the threat of death.
