Hosea 8 (NIV)

Israel to Reap the Whirlwind
1“Put the trumpet to your lips!
An eagle is over the house of the Lord
because the people have broken my covenant
and rebelled against my law.
2 Israel cries out to me,
‘Our God, we acknowledge you!’
3 But Israel has rejected what is good;
an enemy will pursue him.
4 They set up kings without my consent;
they choose princes without my approval.

  1. When we put so much “stuff” in front of God we are setting ourselves up for sin. The Israelites built altars and idols and even if they started as places of true sacrifice they had moved so far away from God that they had no more semblance of God’s law. Outward “godly” behavior means nothing if our heart is not in the right place and God knows our heart as he knew the hearts of these people and that they were so lost and not responding to God’s direction or correction

  2. How sad to see Israel and Judah in such a state of rebellion, forsaking the God who had been so good to them. They give Him lip service at times, but don’t truly acknowledge Him and make their own decisions In important matters when God had always shown Himself willing and able to help. And they will bear the consequences. God said He would judge them in order to keep them on track…blessings and cursing assured…and yet they continue in their pattern of defiance to Him. How important it is for us to learn from their negative example and honor God the way that He deserves.

  3. Israel will cry to Me,
    ‘My God, we know You!’

    All I could think of was the verses in Matthew:

    “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ 23 And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’
