Reading along with us in Hosea? Here’s today’s reading:

Hosea 13 (NIV)

The Lord’s Anger Against Israel
1 When Ephraim spoke, people trembled;
he was exalted in Israel.
But he became guilty of Baal worship and died.
2 Now they sin more and more;
they make idols for themselves from their silver,
cleverly fashioned images,
all of them the work of craftsmen.
It is said of these people,
“They offer human sacrifices!
They kiss calf-idols!”
3 Therefore they will be like the morning mist,
like the early dew that disappears,
like chaff swirling from a threshing floor,
like smoke escaping through a window............Continue Reading

  1. In case we ever wondered how bad Israel had gotten….human sacrifices as if the constant making and worship of idols wasn’t bad enough! The depravity level they had reached was so awful as to sacrifice human life. And yet God said..
    14“I will deliver this people from the power of the grave;
    I will redeem them from death.
    There is always hope in Christ no matter how far we have fallen. Amazing love!

  2. A lot of truth in verse 6. We have been so blessed as a nation. We have forgotten God. But thank him for many on their knees praying for this great country. Most of us traveling on such an easy pass. We have a tendency who gave us our blessings. If your sick. Then pray to God and let the elders pray over you. If your rejoicing then sing hymns of praise. Either way commit ourselves to God moment by monent

  3. Hosea 13 they just don’t get it, they just keep making the same mistakes repeatedly, I don’t know how God can love man, but he will show his wrath in hopes they may learn and follow him, and he will keep doing that!

  4. I was struck by verse 6 as well Mark, and how typical of us to become self satisfied when things are going well and we think somehow that we are the ones who have made the blessings possible. And how far Israel has fallen to condone human sacrifice. How could that in and of itself cause them to think, of course we are on the wrong track…God never asked us to do that. And yet we can find ourselves in the dregs sometimes…and it is certainly true of us as a society. But God still perseveres in calling them back to Him. He still reminds them…hey I brought you out of Egypt…remember me? God is more then justify to judge them because they are not listening to anything else….may we never get that far that we neglect God’s pursuit of us….

    1. Perfect example of Gods love and compassion for man if only we repent and ask for forgiveness. Chapter 13 is Gods rightful wrath. Chapter 14 is His calling us back with his love and compassion. His continuous offering to keep us in His fold.
      I thought it interesting how the word “dew” was used in each chapter as well. In the wrath of Chapter 13, it parallels the dew as a morning mist that just disappears. Gone…nothing more.
      Chapter 14, calling His people back to Him, God is the “dew” which brings blossoming and splendor with roots and shoots. Man will flourish under Gods provision. That, is the dew we should desire.

  5. Lots of analogies used here for pregnancy, childbirth, labor in terms of punishing the wicked. Fear of these horrible outcomes is a guardrail for us, to keep us safe and make us thrive…

  6. Love all those comments !! Woke up this morning around 4am. With tears in my eyes how blessed I am!!! To grow up in religion and be told I was inadequate and not worthy of a relationship with God. Then as an adult to experience in the presence of God. His unconditional love and peace and FREEDOM. and acceptance I’m for me personally is to much for me to intake at times. To be part of Gods family. Adopted in to his presence!!! Along with that the thought that I have been so blessed to have found living hope Christian church and also accepted in such a church where the love of Jesus Christ flows so strong and real. Love all of you and t is such a honor and privilege to be part of this family. Feeling so blessed this morning. My prayer is that God will continue to reveal my gifts to do his will on earth and to serve at LHCC. love you all more than you will ever know for accepting me!!! With tears. Mark J.

  7. “Yet I am the Lord your God
    Ever since the land of Egypt,
    And you shall know no God but Me;
    For there is no savior besides Me.
    I knew you in the wilderness,
    In the land of great drought.
    When they had pasture, they were filled;
    They were filled and their heart was exalted;
    Therefore they forgot Me.”

    So true, when things are rough we call upon the Lord and when things are good, we forget that He is our Savior and Provider. I have been thinking and praying a lot lately about how God provides. What am I relying on Him for and what am I relying on myself/Steve/money,etc for? What is the balance between relying on Him and being a responsible person?

    Great comments from everyone! Sometimes I wait until everyone else comments so I can read them! It’s like going to a “commentary” for insight, but it’s my church family.
