Hosea 12 (NIV)

1 Ephraim feeds on the wind;
he pursues the east wind all day
and multiplies lies and violence.
He makes a treaty with Assyria
and sends olive oil to Egypt.
2 The Lord has a charge to bring against Judah;
he will punish Jacob according to his ways
and repay him according to his deeds.
3 In the womb he grasped his brother’s heel;

  1. Israel being compared to Jacob and his physical struggle with the Lord. This comparison can be made about many of us, struggling with God for our will and not His will to be done. We want things our way but like Jacob we end up in tears knowing that God is right and there is no use in our struggle. Israel is still struggling and holding on to their idols but they will soon realize the struggle is futile.

  2. I am tempted to write, yes, what she said! And just to add, the self assurance mentioned about riches and that can make us think that we are all set. Or we look to other provisions to solve our problems rather than looking to God. Israel and Judah have been both chastised for looking to Egypt and Assyria for aid and it is mentioned again here. It is certainly tempting to look for earthly answers to things because things are right before us and we can see it and it makes sense or it has worked for others…but it is never to be done to the exclusion of seeking God’s counsel and trusting His provision first. Or in Israel and Judah’s case, to have established a pattern of obedience and faithfulness to the covenant that would not have put them in the predicament they are in in the first place. Obedience is a good offense and good defense!

  3. “That is, the Lord God of hosts.
    The Lord is His memorable name.
    So you, by the help of your God, return;
    Observe mercy and justice,
    And wait on your God continually.”
