Reading along with us in Hosea? Here’s today’s reading:

Hosea 14 (NIV)

Repentance to Bring Blessing
1 Return, Israel, to the Lord your God.
Your sins have been your downfall!
2 Take words with you
and return to the Lord.
Say to him:
“Forgive all our sins
and receive us graciously,
that we may offer the fruit of our lips.
3 Assyria cannot save us;
we will not mount warhorses.
We will never again say ‘Our gods’
to what our own hands have made,
for in you the fatherless find compassion.”.........Continue Reading

  1. 9Who is wise? Let them realize these things.
    Who is discerning? Let them understand.
    The ways of the Lord are right;
    the righteous walk in them,
    but the rebellious stumble in them.
    Well that about sums it up! God’s ways are right and we need to walk according to His ways.
    But that means first recognizing our own sin, stopping that sin in our lives, repent of that sin, and thank God for His love and mercy that endures forever despite our sinful tendencies. Israel took their eyes off God and the longer they did the more they slipped into depravity. Walking WITH God everyday and in all things makes it easier to stay on the narrow path. It doesn’t mean life will always be easy but He will be with us when we keep our eyes fixed on Him.

  2. I have to say that verse 6 of Chapter 13 also jumped out at me. It is certainly a problem to be aware of and deal with promptly. Daily reading definitely helps.
    I also liked Hosea’s use of “the morning mist” or dew in Chapter 13 and 14. In chapter 13 he uses the morning mist as an indication of the faithfulness of Israel which vanishes very quickly. In Chapter 14, Hosea (God) uses “dew” to help the nation of Israel “blossom like a lily”. Hope is alive.
    “The ways of the Lord are right; the righteous walk in them, but the rebellious stumble in them.”

  3. God’s desire to restore Israel is full of compassion and love. The same way he feels about us individually. Friends and family can desert us for superficial reasons. But God’s compassion never ends. And what an example has been set by our savior. As Philip asked, Show us the father and that will be enough for us. Philip if you have seen me. You have seen the father!!!!

  4. Now this chapter shows how God would truly like to be with His people. He wants to be their refuge and provision and be able to heal and guide and bless. But it would be inconsistent with His character to do any of that while the people are in rebellion and sin. If He did, He would be condoning that. So He will wait and show His desire for their return. Hopefully they and we wise up to see what verse 9 says: “the ways of the Lord are right; the righteous walk in them, but the rebellious stumble in them”. What a fitting conclusion to the book of Hosea!

  5. “O Israel, return to the Lord your God,
    For you have stumbled because of your iniquity;
    Take words with you,
    And return to the Lord.”

    I was struck by “Take words with you.”
    The Lord wants us to talk to Him; to repent and say it.

    Made me think of the verses in Romans 10 about the definition of belief.
    If we believe in our heart and confess with our mouth, “Jesus is Lord”, we shall be saved.

    “But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith which we preach): 9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. 11 For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.” 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him. 13 For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

    Take words with you and return to the Lord.
