2 Chronicles 21 (NIV)

1 Then Jehoshaphat rested with his ancestors and was buried with them in the City of David. And Jehoram his son succeeded him as king. 2 Jehoram’s brothers, the sons of Jehoshaphat, were Azariah, Jehiel, Zechariah, Azariahu, Michael and Shephatiah. All these were sons of Jehoshaphat king of Israel. 3 Their father had given them many gifts of silver and gold and articles of value, as well as fortified cities in Judah, but he had given the kingdom to Jehoram because he was his firstborn son.

  1. Wow! in stark contrast to all God can accomplish when you obey and follow…when you choose to disobey and even worse lead others astray you could end up with a long, painful disease that leaves you with your bowels falling out and Jehoram found that out the hard way didn’t he!

  2. When Jehoram, oldest son
Of Jehoshaphat established himself firmly over his father’s kingdom, he put all his brothers to the sword along with some of the officials of Israel. Jehoram was thirty-two when he took over. Elijah wrote a letter telling how God would destroy everything he valued and what a horrible death he would have. His whole family would struck down. He ruled 8 years and died with no one caring. Did not even get buried among royal cemetery!

  3. 2nd Chronicles 21 How he could choose to live the way he did after witnessing previously what God had done for his father, he turned his back on God, and he eventually died a painful lonely death.

  4. As much as Jehoshaphat is blessed for being righteous and faithful, jehoram is cursed for his disobedience. How tragic it was to kill his own brothers to secure his throne rather than trusting in God. But we often become what we choose to be influenced by and Ahab was a poor role model. But God is faithful to send a message from a prophet to give Jehoram a chance to turn it around, but he doesn’t and suffers the judgement of God because of it.

  5. Jehoram did not lead the people of Israel as his father had. He followed the way of Ahab, his father in law. This is a pretty good testimony of why Paul told Christians not to be yoked together with unbelievers. Also, it shows that women and wives were/are very powerful influencers over their husbands, despite the patriarchical society. We see this in many other places as well.

“He reigned in Jerusalem eight years and, to no one’s sorrow, departed.”
