2 Chronicles 16 (NIV)

Asa’s Last Years
1 In the thirty-sixth year of Asa’s reign Baasha king of Israel went up against Judah and fortified Ramah to prevent anyone from leaving or entering the territory of Asa king of Judah.
2 Asa then took the silver and gold out of the treasuries of the Lord’s temple and of his own palace and sent it to Ben-Hadad king of Aram, who was ruling in Damascus. 3“Let there be a treaty between me and you,” he said, “as there was between my father and your father. See, I am sending you silver and gold. Now break your treaty with Baasha king of Israel so he will withdraw from me.”.........Continue Reading

  1. A sad end to Asa’s reign. Asa did not consult God in the matter with Baasha and sought a remedy from man and continued the fight against Israel. In hearing where he had made this grave error in judgement he took a “shoot the messenger” approach. He imprisoned the seer, began a reign with mistreatment of God’s people, and ultimately suffered physical illness and death apart from God.
Sad that so many times, hearing the truth of God causes people to react this way. They realize it’s truth but don’t want to hear so they push him away and the things of God become offensive to them when really they are just trying to avoid what they know is their own mistakes they aren’t ready to face up to.

  2. It seems like a repeated theme I am seeing in my Bible reading, where people rely on some world solution for their problems.

Asa relied on the king of Syria, rather than on the Lord.
    David counted his army.
    God reduced Gedeon’s army.

It is very hard to trust in what we cannot see. We like to rely on money in the bank and plenty of food in the pantry. We forget that God provided the people of Israel with manna. We should be wise with the physical resources we have, but know that the Lord provides all of it.

“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Hebrews 11:1

  3. How important it is for us to finish well. We all have our blind spots and Achilles heels, but here Asa fails in an area where he succeeded in the past. We are all subject to falling away and that is why it is sooo important to persevere in the truth and remain faithful to God. It is so unwise to reject counsel because we don’t like the message. How things would have worked out differently if Asa had humbled himself and repented of his ways. It just goes to show though that the Bible tells us the good, the bad and the ugly of it’s characters and we are to learn from all of it. It is also a reflection of aspects of all our lives and shows us that God is willing to use broken vessels and there is always a path to make things right. We just have to be humble and obedient enough to find it.

  4. At that time Hanani the seer came to Asa king of Judah and said to him: “Because you relied on a security pact with the world /King Ben-Hadad. Even though he did the right thing, relying on God the previous time with the right results. I love the way its worded the eyes of the Lord search back and forth across the whole earth looking for hearts that are right so he can show his power in helping them.
