2 Chronicles 17 (NIV)

Jehoshaphat King of Judah
1 Jehoshaphat his son succeeded him as king and strengthened himself against Israel. 2 He stationed troops in all the fortified cities of Judah and put garrisons in Judah and in the towns of Ephraim that his father Asa had captured.

  1. Jehoshaphat began his reign back to the early days of Asa and like David. Under his obedience to God’s ways Judah was strengthened physically, militarily, and spiritually. Nice to see God, unlike man, does not hold grudges but earnestly keeps His promises to future generations. He said obey and He will keep them safe and that is what was happening under Jehoshaphat at this time.

  2. I read that Jehoshaphat served as a kind of apprentice king under Asa for about three years. “In the third year of his reign” he did an amazing thing. Seeing that his people were basically Biblically illiterate, they needed to know God’s commands before they could follow them. So he set out to educate the people and succeeded in reversing the religious decline in the country. The Lord is pleased and shows favor to those who follow Him.

  3. Started Romans once again. 2nd half of chapter one. Explains much of what we see today. More than ever we tend to believe lies that reinforce our own desires dismissing Gods laws. So God gave them over to a depraved mind. Not knowing right from wrong! Homosexuality is certainly forbidden Leviticus 18-22. God uses the word detestable.!! But in our country today it is an acceptable lifestyle. Even some churches embrace it. Sexual sins are extremely hard to resist. But like any other sin it has to be controlled. With the help of church Prayer. The word and counseling strength to resist temptation can be victorious. I’ve seen the evil side of this lifestyle. It’s extremely ugly and heartbreaking. Satan traps so many in all phases of sexual temptation. Guilty!!

      1. The Lord was with Jehoshaphat because he followed the ways of his father David before him. He did not consult the Baals but sought the God of his father and followed his commands rather than the practices and did not worship idols. He obeyed God. Once he passed out the Law of Lord to educate them the fear of the Lord came on them so none declared ear against Jehoshaphat.

  4. This chapter made me think of the verse seek ye first the kingdom of God and all these things will be added to you. After the unfaithful pattern of Asa’s last years, it is good to see his son Jehoshaphat follow in the ways of God. And how fairly unique and precious it is that he sends Levites and priests out to teach the people. The word needs to be learned because it is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. And how neat that God honors it by making foreign nations afraid. It just goes to show it is not by might, nor by power but by my spirit that things can and should be accomplished. And yet the passage also shows it is not wrong to strengthen the military as well, they just should not be the ultimate source of dependence. That is a place that only God should hold.

  5. “Now the Lord was with Jehoshaphat, because he walked in the former ways of his father David; he did not seek the Baals, but sought the God of his father, and walked in His commandments and not according to the acts of Israel.”
