1 Chronicles 10 (NIV)

Saul Takes His Life
1 Now the Philistines fought against Israel; the Israelites fled before them, and many fell dead on Mount Gilboa. 2 The Philistines were in hot pursuit of Saul and his sons, and they killed his sons Jonathan, Abinadab and Malki-Shua. 3 The fighting grew fierce around Saul, and when the archers overtook him, they wounded him........Continue Reading

  1. Sad ending to Saul’s life as a result of his unfaithfulness. Sad treatment to the dead stripping them and keeping heads as trophies. I would like to say we have risen above such behavior in times of war but I suspect we have not it is just not so blatant…

  2. Although details of Saul’s early faithfulness is not given here, how the mighty have fallen is a fitting description of a man initially filled with God’s spirit, who became consumed with jealousy and hatred and eventually abandoned the things of God. And the surest indicator of His unfaithfulness is found in his defeat to the Philistines. And although one can understand his fear of how they would treat him, there is no justification for suicide. Life and death are in God’s hand and we should never take them in or own. But rather operate in faith in how God can recover and restore anything as we turn in faithfulness to Him. As I said to someone years ago, if you don’t want your life, I know God does…so give Him a chance and see how He can turn things around. Thankfully she did and God did just that.

  3. Its interesting how God reveals different truths in scripture to different people. I hadn’t really thought much about Saul’s suicide. I appreciated your understanding of suicide from scripture, Pastor.

Coincidentally, I was just preparing in 1 Samuel 11 last night for our women’s Bible study where Saul comes to the aid of Jabesh Gilead who are under threat from the Ammonites. Here they are in 1 Chronicles taking his body and his sons an burying them. “And when all Jabesh Gilead heard all that the Philistines had done to Saul, all the valiant men arose and took the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons; and they brought them to Jabesh, and buried their bones under the tamarisk tree at Jabesh, and fasted seven days.” I heard this in a sermon last night where he said that JG was so appreciative they went and got Saul’s body and buried it, but he never said where it was in scripture. Then here I am reading it this morning! What is God trying to tell me?

The last portion sums up Saul’s unfaithfulness to God leading to his death. I have been thinking a lot lately about God as a jealous God. It seems to be a recurring theme in the scriptures I have been reading and it has been aching my heart for our nation, all nations, and for unbelievers. There seems to be an “all religions lead to God” mentality in our culture, and a conclusion that it is unnecessary to believe in Jesus to obtain salvation, but our God is a jealous God. I was looking up every time the word “anger” was used in the Bible (because of God’s spirit stirring Saul to anger and action for Jabesh Gilead) and it almost never talks about man’s anger, but continually cites God’s anger at the Israelites because of their idols, abominations, and breaking of His covenant, repeatedly saying that God was jealous. It’s #1 of the Ten Commandments.
