1 Chronicles 11 (NIV)

David Becomes King Over Israel
1 All Israel came together to David at Hebron and said, “We are your own flesh and blood. 2 In the past, even while Saul was king, you were the one who led Israel on their military campaigns. And the Lord your God said to you, ‘You will shepherd my people Israel, and you will become their ruler.’ ”

  1. It is funny that the writer of ! Chronicles makes it appear that this is when David began as king not really acknowledging that he has been ruling over Judah but rather that his reign started once they were out of other options or descendants of Saul. David quickly makes it evident however that God is with him and brings them many victories.
As for the “Mighty men” surrounding David they sounded like quite amazing warriors. So many deaths at their hands and tales of almost super-human victories.
It wouldn’t be Chronicles if it didn’t finish with an exhausting list of names 😉

  2. David was king in Hebron, over tribe of Judah even while Saul was king. The leaders of Israel (the northern tribes) come to anoint him king of all the Jews and lands of Palestine. They recognize God’s hand on him and his abilities in battle, even leading Israel’s army under Saul. When he was on the run from Saul, these mighty men were drawn to Him and they became quite a band of warriors. They are notable for their allegiance to David, for their skill in battle and the fact that they were a rag tag bunch who came from various nations…ie many were non-Jews. Their association with David really speaks to his skill as a warrior and as a leader. In many ways we are known by the people drawn to us as well…
