Psalms 44-45 (NIV)
1 We have heard it with our ears, O God;
our ancestors have told us
what you did in their days,
in days long ago.
2 With your hand you drove out the nations
and planted our ancestors;
you crushed the peoples
and made our ancestors flourish.
3 It was not by their sword that they won the land,
nor did their arm bring them victory;
it was your right hand, your arm,

Psalms 44-45
45: A righteous royal couple?
It appears Psalm 44 is connected to the former Psalms and Psalm 45 is what is referred to as a royal Psalm, where the king of Israel is exalted. It is difficult when we feel as if God is not with us, when He is not answering or does not seem to be working, especially when we don’t think we have done anything wrong to warrant it. Well if and when that happens to us, Psalm 44 shows us that that is sometimes the experience that we have dealing with God and that we are in good company when we go through it. The answer always is though to press in, to believe, to pray, to draw closer to God rather than walking away. The Psalm itself gives us permission to ask God the tough questions and process them with Him. Because the truth remains that He is God, and He is with us, and He does know what we face and He desire to be present and to help and guide. It is often the tough times that strengthens our resolve around those things.
And like I said, Psalm 45 is a royal Psalm. It exalts the king for who he is and desires good things for him. It extends to his family as well as the wife that would be brought to him. Her beauty is exalted as one fitting to be brought to the king and what will come of her life as she binds herself to him. What a very different time that was……
