  1. How different life was in the time of this writing and our own time, at least for us in the first world. When David talks about enemies and God helping him fight, He is talking about actual military battles where nations would rise up against Israel to conquer and loot and Israel would invade other nations as well. All of a sudden God being a fortress and deliverer takes on a whole new meaning. Now that’s not to say we don’t have enemies or that there aren’t parts of our world where the same threat is there, but God remains the same and seeks to be the defender of His people and is on their side. Who of us wouldn’t ask God to reveal His power in practical ways and pave the way for victory or success? Who of us wouldn’t want blessings to flow so us and future generations were able to flourish in peace? But we make our requests and trust God how He will act. It is His name that is hallowed. It is His kingdom that we want to be revealed and His will to be done on earth as it is in heaven. And it is under that umbrella that we ask God to move and provide and protect….but then leave the when and how He answers to Him.

  2. 1Blessed be the Lord, my rock,
    who trains my hands for war,
    and my fingers for battle;
    2he is my steadfast love and my fortress,
    my stronghold and my deliverer,
    my shield and he in whom I take refuge,
    who subdues peoples under me.
