Proverbs 5
I was having trouble understanding what some of the passages meant like in verse 10 where it talks about adultery leading to personal possessions going out to foreigners. But then I got to verse 15 “Let your fountain be blessed, and rejoice in the wife of your youth.” (NASB2020), realized what the context was, and re-read the chapter. At first I thought this was a word of wisdom to a young bachelor (the father-son type language used in the first several chapters of Proverbs made me think the “son” was more like a child) but it seems more like this is a young married adult.
Though this wisdom is transferable to cautioning unmarried men from going after wayward women, from the context of this chapter it is specifically warning those who are married who might be tempted to go astray with another.
“Let them be yours alone, and not for strangers with you. Let your fountain be blessed, and rejoice in the wife of your youth. Like a loving doe and a graceful mountain goat, let her breasts satisfy you at all times; be intoxicated always with her love. For why should you, my son, be intoxicated with a strange woman, and embrace the breasts of a foreigner?” (v. 17-20 NASB2020)
What a beautiful description of a faithful marriage!
Proverbs 5.
How alluring sexual temptation is and yet it is all a trap. A trap that will ensnare and effect many aspects of life. Those in these settings seem to be appealing to you, and yet they are thinking of themselves and will devour whatever is made available to them. And yet we need the clarity of truth and discipline to avoid them and recognize the better path of what God offer us in marriage. It goes to show that God always has an answer for evil, something that He offers that will bless us, as long as we turn away from the wrong and embrace was is right. What He offers brings life, what sin offers takes away life. Eventually it will destroy us on the inside and the outside. How important it is to heed the instruction that comes from those who know rather than what young people normally do, try to figure it out on their own.

Proverbs 5
”For the ways of man are before the eyes of the Lord, And He ponders all his paths. His own iniquities entrap the wicked man, And he is caught in the cords of his sin. He shall die for lack of instruction, And in the greatness of his folly he shall go astray.“
Proverbs 5:21-23 NKJV
God sees all.
Unfaithfulness in marriage is devastating. It tears apart the bond between husband and wife, creates a lack of trust amongst members of the household, it inflicts a boatload of hurt upon the family, it negatively affects the children, it drains the finances, and so on. God’s word is truth…Don’t do it, or you will reap the destructive consequences of the very poor decision that you made.
