After God grants Israel victory Barak and Deborah sing a song together, recounting the details of the events, the challenges that existed and how God caused them to overcome, the ways the tribes participated (and didn’t participate), and how the mighty enemy of Israel was defeated by a woman with a hammer and a tent peg. And God is recognized and praised for what He did to provide victory for His people. And so with this victory Israel has 40 years of peace. How many times do they need to go through this cycle before they get it…it is sad to say often….
It is wonderful to take time to sing of the victory, to have a song that marks it and celebrates it, however, it would be better for this song to become impactful enough that they might learn from it. We see all too often the Israelites taking time to memorialize a victory in some significant way but to what end? A memorial can be poignant when it causes you to remember and act differently as a result otherwise it is just a memory, a statue, or a song.
