Job 3 (NIV)
Job Speaks
1 After this, Job opened his mouth and cursed the day of his birth. 2 He said:

and the night that said, ‘A boy is conceived!’……Continue Reading

How good it is to see, in spite of Job’s great faith, that he is utterly heartbroken over what has happened. It reenforces the reality that faith does not disconnect us from our human condition or emotion, but it does inform them. And for us and him, we grieve, but not like the world who has no hope. So Job is imagining that if he was never born, he would not have to go through what he is going through. It is a desperate thought which we all can understand seeing what he has been through. And yet, we need to be careful not to be overcome by despair either. We have the assurance of God’s presence to comfort and His plan and provisions to secure us. And we always have the promise of eternity to gladden our hearts. May our hearts be strong in times like this.
Job 3
Job seems well within normal to have such a reaction to what is happening to him. I am sure any of us would be this broken in light of what has happened to him at this point. However, still no frustration, anger, or resentment toward God just despair in his situation. I think how quickly people who make bad decisions and wind up in a mess blame God and become angry with him, yet Job who has done no wrong never reaches that point here.
Job 3
A very deep and poetic proclamation of: “I wish I’d never been born.”
