Reading along with us in Job & Hebrews? Here’s today’s reading:
Hebrews 6 (NIV)
1 Therefore let us move beyond the elementary teachings about Christ and be taken forward to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God, 2 instruction about cleansing rites, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment.……Continue Reading

Clearly a controversial chapter in light of verses 4-6. I would argue we are not talking about someone who made a mistake and strayed away to sin but rather someone who never really gave their life to Christ to start. Over the years I have known many people that would call themselves a “good person” or even a “Christian” but much like a Pharisee it was more for show than truth faith and belief in Jesus as their Savior. I believe that once that truly happens in a person’s heart that the gift of salvation is theirs forever. These verses more likely explain a person who really never truly came to that place of belief to start or are not referring to salvation at all and rather just repentance. Salvation brings us to heaven, however, our reward there will be based on our life here. Did we live a life like Job or did we receive salvation based on believing in the work Christ did on our behalf but never really reached the full potential of God’s plan and purpose for our lives because we couldn’t let go of certain sin, selfishness, or pride. Perhaps these verses speak more to what that difference will look like than to salvation at all.
It is so important to remember the context of this chapter is about moving to maturity and leaving behind those things that are part of immaturity or will keep us gaining the fullness of Jesus. And is therefore written to saved people. The things to be avoided are in verse 2. The things to be embraced are in verses 4 and 5. SO, if you have operated in verses 4 and 5 and go back to the immature, external, human works things of verse 2, it will be hard/impossible (I have a problem with this word mostly because the author himself has a problem with this word as all he speaks about is them getting it right) to go back to verses 4 and 5. SO this is not repentance in terms of salvation, but repentance about what the right path to maturity/Christian growth is. And if the path to growing in Christ wrongly involves retuning to Old Testament sacrifices, that is what verse 7 could ne referring to. And notice verse 7 and 8 talk about bearing correct fruit….the evidence of maturity or immaturity. And verse 9 and 10 express his confidence that they will get it right and how he regretted having to express it the way he did. He even compliment them on the evidence of their maturity. The chapter then ends with how God verifies His promises. And how much better is the promise that He has given to us/them in Jesus, our great high priest So further affirmation that this chapter doesn’t teach against eternal security, but actually validates it.
Hebrews 6
In this chapter, we are given a glimpse of the nature of God. His purpose is made very clear to us, he will do what he promises, he cannot lie, and he solidifies this with an oath. So..”we who have fled to take hold of the hope set before us may be greatly encouraged. We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.”

Well said and explained Kelly and Pastor!
Hebrews 6
I think Paul (or whoever the author is) is posing a hypothetical. If you have truly experienced the heavenly gift, the Holy Spirit, etc. it is not possible to go backwards. I think the context is Judaism, once you acknowledge Christ as the Jewish messiah, you can’t go back to requiring sacrifices, etc, the old way of relating to God. He assures them that the promise God made to Abraham remains and they should continue to mature in Christ who goes before them.
“This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters the Presence behind the veil, where the forerunner has entered for us, even Jesus, having become High Priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.”
Hebrews 6:19-20 NKJV
