Jeremiah 7 (NIV)

False Religion Worthless
1 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord2“Stand at the gate of the Lord’s house and there proclaim this message:
“ ‘Hear the word of the Lord, all you people of Judah who come through these gates to worship the Lord3 This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Reform your ways and your actions, and I will let you live in this place. 4 Do not trust in deceptive words and say, “This is the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord!”............Continue Reading

  1. God knows our heart. We can not live a double life. We can not sin Monday through Saturday and think walking into church on Sunday washes that away. god is looking for true repentance from us as He was from these people. These people who thought going through the motions in the temple some how justified their sinful behavior.
Again God reminds us that His judgement and correction never comes without warning! He gives us countless opportunities to hear and repent. We need to learn from the mistakes of the past and head these warnings and repent!

  2. Reminds me of growing up catholic. Having a form of religion but denying its power. During the week all sorts of idolatry and sin. But for one hour a week Head to the temple to be right with God.

  3. What a patient and forbearing God we have. In the midst of all the things his people are doing to worship foreign gods, to treat each other poorly, to take advantage of vulnerable people that God called them to protect, and their hypocrisy, God starts off by saying if you stop all you are doing and reform your ways, I will let you stay in the land and hold back the judgement that is coming. And yet they will not. How stubborn, prideful and defiant they are to reject the God of the heavens and of the covenant and to follow false gods. And yet they are only hurting themselves and others, not God. How true that is of us as well. When we disobey and don’t follow God, we only harm ourselves, not God. And the only thing He can do is show His displeasure over what they/we have done with discipline and judgement. How sad to walk away from one who is so good and so true and so patient. But His patience is definitely wearing thin with these people.

  4. God is watching all the activity, in and out of His house.

“Behold, you trust in lying words that cannot profit. Will you steal, murder, commit adultery, swear falsely, burn incense to Baal, and walk after other gods whom you do not know, and then come and stand before Me in this house which is called by My name, and say, ‘We are delivered to do all these abominations’? Has this house, which is called by My name, become a den of thieves in your eyes? Behold, I, even I, have seen it,” says the Lord.

Made me think of Romans 6 “What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?” ……… “What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Certainly not!”
