Jeremiah 51 (NIV)

1 This is what the Lord says:
“See, I will stir up the spirit of a destroyer
against Babylon and the people of Leb Kamai
2 I will send foreigners to Babylon
to winnow her and to devastate her land;
they will oppose her on every side
in the day of her disaster.

  1. Jeremiah continues with God’s message to the Babylonians and it is much the same. Because of their mistreatment of the Jews and the resulting pride, God will bring judgement upon them. They believe themselves to be unassailable, but a mightier power will be out there. God here even identifies them as the Medes. I can only imagine how this message would have been received in Babylon. They were at the height of their glory and then this Jewish God says we will be vanquished, never to be reestablished? They would laugh, but we know that God is right and they and the Jews would be wise to follow His instruction and warnings…..as are we…..

  2. Amazing to look back on history. Babylon. Gets defeated. Medes and Persia. Greeks. Romans. Wonder what history would look like if one of these powerful kingdoms kept God first. We see things in our country seem to be heading in that direction. And Gods will on earth will be carried out. Like to think that the numerous Christians on their knees praying for this country will hold back the wrath of God. For the sake of our children and grandchildren. Let’s never stop praying for this nation

  3. I love the section of this chapter written about God’s power and the confidence we have when we stand with Him. The strong poetic words are a nice contrast to the strong words of destruction in this lengthy chapter about all that will fall on Babylon.
    I am sure this news was not received well by the Babylonians and to add insult to injury God again uses a visual example. Having Jeremiah instruct Seraiah throw the scroll into the Euphrates weighted to symbolize the complete overwhelming destruction coming.
