Jeremiah 40 (NIV)

Jeremiah Freed
1 The word came to Jeremiah from the Lord after Nebuzaradan commander of the imperial guard had released him at Ramah. He had found Jeremiah bound in chains among all the captives from Jerusalem and Judah who were being carried into exile to Babylon. 2 When the commander of the guard found Jeremiah, he said to him, “The Lord your God decreed this disaster for this place. 3 And now the Lord has brought it about; he has done just as he said he would. All this happened because you people sinned against the Lord and did not obey him..........Continue Reading

  1. Once again God provides for Jeremiah and rewards his faithfulness in a time when it seems all hope was lost. As he is being carried away with the exiles the king calls for his release and he is given a choice to continue to Babylon where it seems he would be well cared for or stay in Judah and it did seem he struggled making this decision but ultimately stay in Judah but even in that God makes provisions for him as he was given rations and a gift.
Even those left behind in Judah and Jerusalem seemed to be the most poor and desolate it seems that God’s blessing was still there some how as they had wine and olive oil in abundance.

  2. A Babylon commander tells Jeremiah You have been captured and overtaken because you disobeyed God. Imagine that. Someone who most likely cared nothing about God acknowledging God. He is free to go anywhere in Babylon. He returns to Judah. Back to poor and unwanted. The rest of this chapter. Left me with a headache

  3. More details are given about Jeremiah’s release and protection which further reenforce God’s hand on him. How amazing that he is found amongst all the people being brought to Babylon. How comforting and affirming it must have been for him to have the shackles removed. He was faithful to speak God’s word when it was very unpopular, and God is faithful to keep him safe amongst the people who didn’t listen to the message. And what humility and compassion are on Jeremiah’s part to remain with the poorest of the poor in Judah. What regard for him is found in being told go where you will. To me, he could have been assured of better things in Babylon considering Nebuchadnezzar’s regard for him. But he remains faithful to the promised land and the people that remained.

  4. God provides for the poor remnant left in Judah. Jeremiah chooses to stay with them after being given a few choices.

I assume that the captain of the Babylonian guard does not know the God of the Jews, and yet he knows exactly why this is happening to them.

“And the captain of the guard took Jeremiah and said to him: “The Lord your God has pronounced this doom on this place. 3 Now the Lord has brought it, and has done just as He said. Because you people have sinned against the Lord, and not obeyed His voice, therefore this thing has come upon you.”

I wonder if he knows this because of Jeremiah’s prophesies.

God does seem to work through Nebuchadnezzar in the life of the Jews, as we see in the book of Daniel, and God does work in Nebuchadnezzar as well.
