Jeremiah 23 (NIV)

The Righteous Branch
1“Woe to the shepherds who are destroying and scattering the sheep of my pasture!” declares the Lord2bTherefore this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says to the shepherds who tend my people: “Because you have scattered my flock and driven them away and have not bestowed care on them, I will bestow punishment on you for the evil you have done,” declares the Lord3“I myself will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the countries where I have driven them and will bring them back to their pasture, where they will be fruitful and increase in number..............Continue Reading

  1. In every overall warning of judgement coming, there is always the promise of what God will do in spite of His people’s failings. There is always the promise to restore a remnant to the land and establish a standard of righteousness around and for them. It is hard to imagine that someone would not see a promise of Messiah in this chapter, and more specifically Jesus! He was a righteous Branch from David’s line and He would save His people and carry the fitting title of the Lord our Righteousness! And yet in the midst of this glimmer of hope, there is the reality of all that is wrong in those who should be helping God’s people follow Him. The shepherds are scattering the sheep, taking advantage of them rather than protecting them. And the prophets are using there office to benefit themselves and strengthen the hands of evildoers. They purport to be speaking for God, but they only tell the people what they want to hear. We will see if the prophets of our day speaking of restoration to godliness are speaking for God or themselves. But no one should claim to speak for God casually or for self promotion. Because they will just say false things as the prophets of Jeremiah’s day did. And Jeremiah’s mission was much like ours much of the time, saying things that are unpopular. Things people don’t want to hear as they are more satisfied to hear things that justify themselves and validate the ungodly course that they are on. May we live and speak in ways that represent our God and our Savior well! Especially if we are leaders!

  2. We start this chapter with the Hope of Jesus coming. The hope of salvation that we still have today! The ultimate sin of God’s mercy for us sending His own son to take our place in death!
    But end with the responsibility to know God’s words and not be lead away by the false prophets. We see this so much today the twisting of the words of the Bible for people’s personal agendas! I think of how young people are falling victim to interpretations of His word that allow them to live in sin. We need to search our hearts, learn more from true teachers of His word, and trust God and rely on the wisdom He provides us to know the difference!

  3. The shepherds are scattering the sheep. The prophets are false, they do not speak for God.

    Nonetheless, God promises to regather His people to their own land.
    “As the Lord lives who brought up and led the descendants of the house of Israel from the north country and from all the countries where I had driven them.’ And they shall dwell in their own land.”

    And He will send a righteous ruler, Jesus.
    “Behold, the days are coming,” says the Lord,
    “That I will raise to David a Branch of righteousness;
    A King shall reign and prosper,
    And execute judgment and righteousness in the earth.
    6 In His days Judah will be saved,
    And Israel will dwell safely;
    Now this is His name by which He will be called:

    THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.”
