Judgment Against Wicked Kings
1 This is what the Lord says: “Go down to the palace of the king of Judah and proclaim this message there: 2‘Hear the word of the Lord to you, king of Judah, you who sit on David’s throne—you, your officials and your people who come through these gates. 3 This is what the Lord says: Do what is just and right. Rescue from the hand of the oppressor the one who has been robbed. Do no wrong or violence to the foreigner, the fatherless or the widow, and do not shed innocent blood in this place.............Continue Reading

  1. Once again God gives someone in Judah a chance to repent and get it right. In this case it is the king, a descendant of David who He encourages to do what is right and stop doing what is wrong. I was struck by God’s emphasis on how he and the leaders of Judah were taking advantage of people: the alien, fatherless and widow and those who are being robbed. Or at least God says take care of those people and a descendant of David will remain on the throne. What mercy God is willing to show in light of people turning their hearts and behavior to Him. God also emphasizes the good example that Josiah had set that his sons have forsaken and their infidelity to God will cause people who observe Israel to see destruction rather than the blessing that God intended for His people. The king has strayed and so the people have strayed and now the kings will be exiled. Their riches will be turned over to Nebuchadnezzar and they will never return to the land. They think they will maintain their standing in Judah and the land, but God will drive them out. But God warned them when they felt secure and yet they didn’t listen and followed other gods, which led them to mistreat people. God expects more from those who lead!

  2. Wow God is still giving His people a chance to repent! and again we see the things that God wants us to avoid in our own lives. Idolatry, mistreatment of others, greed, selfishness, and pride. These sins seem so obvious and yet are such common pitfalls and so difficult for us to overcome.
Hopefully as we read Jeremiah we can internalize these mistakes we still make today and prevent our own destruction.

  3. They are told the remedy and still they do not repent.

“Execute judgment and righteousness, and deliver the plundered out of the hand of the oppressor. Do no wrong and do no violence to the stranger, the fatherless, or the widow, nor shed innocent blood in this place. For if you indeed do this thing, then shall enter the gates of this house, riding on horses and in chariots, accompanied by servants and people, kings who sit on the throne of David. But if you will not hear these words, I swear by Myself,” says the Lord, “that this house shall become a desolation.” ’ ”

He told them the issue: “Why has the Lord done so to this great city?’ 9 Then they will answer, ‘Because they have forsaken the covenant of the Lord their God, and worshiped other gods and served them.’ ”
