Jeremiah 14 (NIV)

Drought, Famine, Sword
1 This is the word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah concerning the drought:
2“Judah mourns,
her cities languish;
they wail for the land,
and a cry goes up from Jerusalem.
3 The nobles send their servants for water;
they go to the cisterns
but find no water.
They return with their jars unfilled;
dismayed and despairing,
they cover their heads.............Continue Reading

  1. The people must have been so far from God for god to tell Jeremiah once again not to pray for them. The fact that they were beyond prayers truly shows how bad things had gotten.
    I was struck by God’s anger not only toward false prophets but those who listen to them. We are not without guilt when we listen to false prophets. We need to rely on God’s word for discernment. I think in particular about people’s interpretation of basic commandments in the Bible. How things are twisted to make “Acceptable sins” and when we fall victim to those arguments and start to believe it what a slippery slope that leads to and that is on us as much as those creating that argument!

  2. I see a lesson on personal responsibility here. Jeremiah mentions that false prophets are saying God is pleased with what they are doing, yet God does not accept that as an excuse. Though we listen to teachers, we are still responsible for our knowledge and wisdom (the Bereans are a wonderful example of this).

    Being in the word and practicing it daily is so important in determining the truth of what we hear.

  3. Drought was just one of the things that God warned the Israelites of in the curses listed at the end of Deuteronomy as well as what came at other times of disobedience. So they really shouldn’t be surprised when it comes at this time or wonder why it was happening and let it lead to repentance. And yet in the presence of so much suffering, Jeremiah prays for the nation and land and does what is most effective in prayer, reminds God of who He is and what He has promised. And yet God’s response, don’t bother. As mentioned above, what a great indication of just how disobedient the people are. In fact all the things that would normally curry God’s favor will not be accepted by Him anymore.

    And hard times always brings out false prophets, telling people things will be great just when God’s judgement is coming. We need to be wary of false prophets in our day as well…and especially as the end gets closer and unfolds. And yet in spite of what God has said, God is saddened by the condition Judah is in and Jeremiah does pray. But God will make clear that it won’t change anything…..

  4. A drought causes the people to recognize their need for the Lord!

    “Are there any among the idols of the nations that can cause rain?
    Or can the heavens give showers?
    Are You not He, O Lord our God?
    Therefore we will wait for You,
    Since You have made all these.”

    Often I think of weather as unrelated to God and just something that He has set in place and holds in motion. Most of the time, I think this is true, “it is what it is”, but certainly God can use the weather to send us a message.
