Jeremiah 13 (NIV)

A Linen Belt
1 This is what the Lord said to me: “Go and buy a linen belt and put it around your waist, but do not let it touch water.” 2 So I bought a belt, as the Lord directed, and put it around my waist.
3 Then the word of the Lord came to me a second time: 4“Take the belt you bought and are wearing around your waist, and go now to Perath and hide it there in a crevice in the rocks.” 5 So I went and hid it at Perath, as the Lord told me............Continue Reading

  1. Nothing like an object lesson to get a message across. A belt resembling the close relationship that God desired with His people is made useless due to improper use, just like the Jews have become useless because of their rejection of God. Every time Jeremiah provides a message like this showing the Jews that the coming judgement is due to their rejection of Him, it is an opportunity for them to turn back to Him or at least a commitment from God to make sure they know what got them into their mess so they know how to get out. It is also a message for future generations so they will know why things have happened the way they do. And it is not just sin that is addressed but rejection of God and worshipping false gods. How bad things must have been for God to lack compassion on them. And the high and low will suffer together. Jeremiah 13:23 is a good reminder of the grip that sin can have on us. When we get accustomed to doing evil, it gets harder and harder to do good. The Jews appear to be beyond repair and so the only lesson they can learn is from the judgement of God. God always does what it takes to keep us on track….

  2. Again, another reminder about how God hates idolatry.. God wants to bless His people but the worship of other gods will always get in the way.. I have to watch my own life that God will always be my no. 1 priority..

  3. God is always trying to show us things in ways we will understand. Whether it be parables or this object lesson it shows how well He knows us and that is better than we know ourselves for He is our creator.
He wanted to show the people how far off the mark they are in their relationship with Him. How they have made idols in front of Him, their pride and selfishness and now judgement must come. But still always a warning first, a chance for us to stop and change our ways. Sad that so many times like his people here we still don’t listen.

  4. It’s amazing how many chances God gives. Brings to mind Matthew 18:22 and Jesus saying to forgive seventy times seven times.
