Exodus 28 (NIV)
The Priestly Garments
1“Have Aaron your brother brought to you from among the Israelites, along with his sons Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar, so they may serve me as priests. 2 Make sacred garments for your brother Aaron to give him dignity and honor. 3 Tell all the skilled workers to whom I have given wisdom in such matters that they are to make garments for Aaron, for his consecration, so he may serve me as priest……Continue Reading
Exodus 28
I would love to see a picture of this incredible garment. It certainly sounds magnificent!
There is a lot of detail given by God of how important it was to come before God with the right attitude of the heart. The High Priest { Aaron} and his sons were to dress as God commanded them and if they didn`t they would die. This was a sacred duty and they were to dress and obey as God commanded them for they were representing Him. This was also for the people to honor them for they represented God. But the priests had to be humble before God and not be arrogant of their positions. Remember what happened to Aaron`s two oldest sons? Nadab and Abihu offered strange fire before the Lord which He commanded them not to. God consumed them with fire. Lev. 10:1,2. Aaron the high priest was to be the high priest before the people until the Lamb of God came as the only One who die for our sins. The priests garments, ephod, breastplate, and robe are a few things mentioned. Notice that on the ephod Aaron was to carry two stones engraved with the 12 tribes of Israel. Also on the breastplate he was to have 12 stones each engraved with one tribe on each one according to the birth order of each tribe. I think the order of the stones is lined up with each tribe from oldest to youngest. 28:17–21. Aaron was to bear the iniquity of Israel upon his heart. Also on him was placed a plate of pure gold on the mitre which was on his forehead with the inscription HOLINESS TO THE LORD. vs36. God bless.
Holiness to the LORD.
I was thinking of the meticulous Descriptions of all these garments and utensils and jewelry and it really is to define holiness. Everything is “set apart” to the Lord. It is “for glory and for beauty” as the hats for Aaron and his sons are made.
Exodus 28
Love that God makes it clear that even the beauty of the priestly garments is because of Him, not of man:
“And you shall make holy garments for Aaron your brother, for glory and for beauty. You shall speak to all the skillful, whom I have filled with a spirit of skill, that they make Aaron’s garments to consecrate him for my priesthood.”
All our talents and skills come from the Lord and belong to Him. May we ever use them for His glory, as He sees fit.
Exodus 28
It’s interesting to see all the symbolism in the priestly garments in terms of how God views spiritual leadership and expects us to internalize things if we are in spiritual leadership ourselves.
What a sight Aaron must have been wearing this. It was to give him dignity and honor (v2), help him make decisions before the Lord (v15,30) and represent the people in the different items that would bear the names of the tribes. How important it would be for him and anyone else wearing garments or holding position where there would be recognition, that these garments set him aside to the Lord. How significant that that is exactly what was on his head “Holy to the Lord”. So it was about him in the role that he functioned in before God and for the people, but it was not about him in the fact that all these things set him apart to a God who holds the true meaning of everything and the only One worthy of worship. What an important balance for all believers to understand who have inside them, effectively, the shekinah glory of God…the very thing the priest had to duded up like this to approach….amazing…

These garnments were no ordinary thing and with their meticuous design every inch was designed by God and reflective of the beauty He puts into everything He creates. Makes me think everytime we feel unhappy with our hair, body, or any other detail of ourselves, we are also His creation, meticulously designed for His glory!
