Reading along with us in Ephesians? Here’s today’s reading:

Ephesians 5 (NIV)

1 Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children 2 and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
3 But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people. 4 Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving.............Continue Reading

  1. I always say to my kids if you are doing or saying something that you wouldn’t do or say right in front of me then you shouldn’t be doing it. Likewise God is telling us that we should behave in such a way pleasing to Him and if we are trying to hide in the dark thinking we might get away with something we are being foolish because He knows. We should involve ourselves in the things of God not this world.
The picture given to us comparing the marriage relationship and God’s relationship to the church is a powerful one. Marriage can be taken for granted these days and the reminder of the deep and forever commitment God intended for it to be is a beautiful one.

  2. Here’s a part of scripture I struggle with. Depending on who I am with. I might cross the line and engage in wrong conversation just to get a laugh. Still working on that one. No problem getting drunk haven’t drank in years. Love your wife as Christ loves the Church. I do. My wife is a beautiful person. I don’t deserve a woman as loving as my wife. I don’t deserve a savior either. Very blessed

  3. Ephesians 5 – I love that we should be imitators of God, we should love others as Christ loved us, it’s not so easy these days with the darkness that surrounds us but we have that light that shines in the darkness, we have to learn to live as children of that Light. Always be thankful!

  4. Following God’s ways and forsaking the things of the flesh and the world continues to be the emphasis in this chapter. Sexual immorality is such a powerful temptation that not even a hint of it should be found in our lives. How important it is for us to die to such things and live in the truth and power of God because if we give it an inch then satan and the sin nature will take much more than a mile. Paul emphasizes the faulty, foolish and destructive nature of the ways of the world and our old ways and for us to live in the realization that in Christ our citizenship and identification is now in God and so it therefore makes sense to live that way. We are to be filled with Him, more specifically the Spirit, rather than being controlled by any aspect of the flesh. And this is to impact not only our souls and our inner dynamic, but also our treatment of people. Relationships can be transformed as we are transformed by the will, nature and power of God. And there is no more fundamental relationship than marriage. Wives are to submit and husbands are to love…not a very popular principle in our world today, but how important it is for giving the man what he is most looking for and the woman what she is looking for, but that flowing, sacrificially, from the other party. It is so important to recognize in every aspect of life that it is not about us, but about God and about others. It is amazing to me how much fuller our lives become when we follow that line of thinking and behavior….

  5. I found this chapter very relevant to our world and society today.
I think we, even as believers, have come to accept many of these things: fornication and all uncleanness or covetousness, let it not even be named among you, as is fitting for saints; neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor coarse jesting. I found myself convicted by this list, not because I am an active participant, but because many of them are subtly accepted in my own mind and in the world around me.
    – sex in movies and entertainment
    – homosexuality or trans-sexual openly…even in the church.
    – course joking – sitcoms, etc.
    – covetousness is the American lifestyle…the only thing is that we don’t just covet it, we actually buy it or take it.
    – sex outside of marriage…even in the church.

God takes these thing seriously and the whole world is in danger of God’s judgment because of them. “Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. Therefore do not be partakers with them.”

    How should we handle it?
“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light 9 (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth), 10 finding out what is acceptable to the Lord. 11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them. 12 For it is shameful even to speak of those things which are done by them in secret. 13 But all things that are exposed are made manifest by the light, for whatever makes manifest is light. 14 Therefore He says:

    “Awake, you who sleep,
    Arise from the dead,
And Christ will give you light.”

15 See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, 16 redeeming the time, because the days are evil.

17 Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18 And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, 20 giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21 submitting to one another in the fear of God.”
