Deuteronomy 6 (NIV)
Love the Lord Your God
1 These are the commands, decrees and laws the Lord your God directed me to teach you to observe in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess, 2 so that you, your children and their children after them may fear the Lord your God as long as you live by keeping all his decrees and commands that I give you, and so that you may enjoy long life.……Continue Reading

DEUTERONOMY 6
Verse 6 And these words….shall be in thy heart. Unless there is something greater than ourselves, our memory, feelings, our science, that move us to do right, there will be no other way to do it. What God says must abide in our heart, the core of our truth, the source of what drives us. The words must be part of me, not outside. Heart, not head knowledge. In the Spirit, not in the letter only, When His word is hid in my heart, I will not sin against God, because I can’t! -Reb
Good to have you back commenting, Gordon!
The Jewish people were to teach their children about God and all His commandments and teachings and all His greatness, along with personal love for them. This was to be done throughout every generation. What would had happened if this was actually done? They kept falling away from God and going after their made up false gods. They are a lesson to us as Christians. We are to teach our children and grandchildren about our living Savior Jesus Christ. It can hurt when people are blind to the truth. but remember they are in His hands. We can only share about Jesus and how they can be saved. We know that we have the truth. We have all the proof of His resurrection, eye witness accounts, Prophets telling of His two comings thousand of years before the first coming. The second has yet to be. The drastic change in the apostles and even our own lives. Just to name a few. When sharing about Christ, it is best to direct the conversation toward their conscience. Jesus used the Ten Commandments to make people realize that they are sinners. Like He did with the rich young ruler. Jesus made a point of saying that no one is good. Only the Father is good. God bless you all.
We are to do our best to raise our children in the fear and admonition of the Lord, and what better way to do so then to talk about Him as much as we can. We should talk about who He is and what He has done, in the word as well as in our lives…And as we and they follow the standard of God, things will go well for us in much the same way God promises it will go well for the Jews if they are faithful to His commands. And even here God emphasizes that this should not be a rote exercise of following rules, but we should internalize them in our hearts and should spring from the love we have for God. It is hard to read passages like this when we know how much Israel failed in these commands. But they do show us why God then acted in the way that He did towards them. May we do better.
To love the lord our God with all our heart with all our soul, and with all our strength. What a beautiful world it would be, but we have seen the repercussions of not believing there is a God
”“And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.“
Deuteronomy 6:6-9 NKJV
This was the verse that convinced (convicted) us to homeschool our children. We had talked to many Christian parents. Those who sent their kids to public school, private and a couple who were homeschooling. Those who sent to public school often complained about what was taught, and the lack of oversight and control they had as parents. I thought it looked really hard for many reasons. We could not afford private school. How could I teach my children about the Lord and demonstrate our faith if they were elsewhere for 8 hours a day? Homeschooling was easier. Not that it wasn’t work, but it was both purposeful and relaxed. I can’t say that we were perfect in any way, academically or spiritually, but we tried to foster relationship with the Lord and with our kids. Even with many failures in some aspects, my conclusion (at this point in my kids lives) it was successful.
It is clear God wants His word and truth written on our hearts and minds so completely that it literally spills over onto the people around us. But it isn’t just sharing the “rules” of God but the relationship. For me teaching my kids about God was talking about Him as He was and is a family member. To remind them always ALL He has done for us not just generally but specifically. Making sure they know the times in our lives where He has been there through some tremendous obstacles and made paths when I saw no other way through. They definietly need to know the Bible is our instruction book but they need to know the Father as another member of our family (the best one) to go to with their own problems and questions. They need to learn to talk to Him and listen to Him as well. They need to create a personal relationship of their own with Him and we should demonstrate what that looks like.
